BPS Student Climate Survey: Student Experience & School Environment

Purpose of the Climate Surveys

At Belmont Public Schools, we believe that students’ voices are essential to creating safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments.

School climate surveys are widely used in public education and provide valuable insight into students’ experiences. Belmont last conducted a districtwide climate survey in 2018. Relaunching this effort is an important step in advancing our continuous improvement work.

This spring, we will conduct a pilot Student Climate Survey to better understand students’ experiences and strengthen our schools through thoughtful, data-informed improvement.

Following this pilot phase, the survey will be refined and expanded districtwide for all students in Grades 3–12 beginning in Spring 2027, with annual administration thereafter.

About the Pilot Survey

The pilot survey was developed by a district Climate Survey Task Force composed of parents, community leaders, and school officials. It was also reviewed by more than 100 stakeholders to ensure it is developmentally appropriate, well-rounded, and aligned with district values and federal guidelines.

The survey asks students about their experiences with safety, belonging, relationships, fairness, and access to support. By listening carefully to student perspectives, we can identify strengths and make informed decisions that enhance learning environments across the district.

  • The pilot survey will be administered in one class per grade, Grades 3–12, during spring 2026.

  • Guardians of students in participating classrooms will be contacted by email.

  • Participation is voluntary, and student responses are confidential.

  • Results will be reviewed only in summary form and used solely to inform school and district improvement efforts.

  • The survey will be administered during the school day on district-issued devices using a secure district-managed Google Form.

    • Grades 3–4: approximately 20–30 minutes

    • Grades 5–6: approximately 15–20 minutes

    • Grades 7–12: approximately 10–15 minutes

  • In accordance with the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), families will be able to:

    • review the survey in advance – see links below

    • may choose to opt their child out of participation.

We value our partnership with families and appreciate your support as we pilot this important initiative to elevate student voice and strengthen our schools.
