Masks optional @ Winn Brook

Masks optional @ Winn Brook

As you may be already aware, Belmont School Committee is meeting this evening at 6:00 pm to discuss the masking policy for schools. It seems likely that the decision to be "masks optional" in our schools could become policy as soon as tomorrow, March 8th.

What does this mean at Winn Brook?

If the School Committee approves a masks optional policy, students and staff will not be required to wear masks beginning tomorrow. I know from my conversations with you that some of you will be very excited about this and some will be concerned. As with all of the other pivots we have done throughout the pandemic, we will figure this out together. Other districts have already made this change so we can be informed by their experiences as well.

What can I do at home?

Our mental health team has prepared a social story that we will be using at school. Feel free to review this at home with your child if it helps your conversations. Please let your child's teacher know if your child is anxious about this transition.

What health and safety measures will still be in place?

We will continue with our hand washing protocols and our use of hand sanitizer. We continue to make sure classrooms have proper ventilation via our HVAC system and room purifiers. We will still snack outside weather-permitting and distance at lunch. Kids who visit the nurse's office will be expected to put on a mask if they are not wearing one.

The most important thing we all can do as we make this transition is to respect each other's choices.  Everyone has a story and reasons for their choices. There are no right or wrong answers - just individual choices. As adults we can respect that and model that for our children. As always, please reach out if you have questions or concerns.

Anything else?

On a completely separate (and more playful) note, a teacher in California partnered with her kindergarten students to create Peptoc as a way to add joy in the world. If you need a boost, you can call the number in the article.
