Introducing Whaley - our new school mascot

Dear Wellington Families,

We hope that this email finds you well. As you know, over the past months we have thought deeply about our values and the ways in which we represent ourselves to our community.  We spent many hours as a staff discussing who we are, what we believe, and how we implement those beliefs in our classrooms and learning spaces.

After months of meaningful conversations, we decided to select new values that celebrate the individual differences and beliefs that each person brings to our school and highlight our interconnectedness as a community. After a great deal of discussion with staff, families, and experts in the field, we have chosen the terms caring, curiosity, and equity as our core values.  We will be spending the next school year unpacking these terms and thinking about the norms that will accompany them. Please continue to reach out with your thinking now or as we continue this work in the future. Your feedback is invaluable to us.

I am also thrilled to announce that after receiving over 400 entries and participating in two rounds of voting, we have chosen our new mascot. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Roger E (Whaley) Whalington.  A google search of whales indicates that they represent  peace, compassion, love and creativity.  They are also social animals by their very nature and often depend on each other to succeed.  Here is a preliminary sketch of Whaley made by our talented teacher, Elizabeth Carey.  We will share more images in the future.

We introduced our students to Whaley this morning and they are excited that we finally made a decision.

I hope that you have a wonderful second to last day of school. I will be in touch again tomorrow.

All the best,
