All 5th Graders will be meeting the Chenery music teachers this week to learn about their options for music classes this year, which include Chorus, Orchestra or Band. Once your child is ready to make their choice for the year, these instructions will help you sign them up, rent an instrument if necessary, pay participation fees (band/orchestra only) or apply for fee waivers/scholarships.
Making Your Selection
The CMS Music teachers will present all of these options to students during the first weeks of school. Please discuss these options with your 5th Grader, and then complete the following steps to choose their music ensemble for the year:
Band and Orchestra only:
1. Participation Fee:
2. Rent your instrument
3. Attend Instrument Rental Day, WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 29
- 3:00-6:00 PM - BHS or CMS Cafeteria (Location TBD)
- Bring a Photo ID to pick up your instrument
Registration and Rental Fees for Band & Orchestra
There are some costs and fees associated with participation in Band and Orchestra. Fee waivers, reductions, scholarship instruments and even free private lessons are available to families who qualify for financial assistance (details below).

*Instrument ………….……………….$25-75/month (Interest free, rent-to-own)
Saturday Morning Music School (OPTIONAL)......................$250 and up
*Important note about instrument rentals: David French Music is the vendor we have selected to provide instrument rentals directly to our students. You are not required to rent your instrument from David French Music. There are a number of vendors in the area that will rent instruments to you, but David French Music is the only vendor that will deliver instruments directly to your school, pick up instruments for repair, and the only vendor that will operate a Rental Day for our schools.
If you qualify for a fee waiver:
You will also receive a scholarship instrument from David French Music, free of charge.
You may also enroll in the Belmont Scholars program at Powers Music School. This provides enrollment in Saturday Morning Music School and weekly private lessons at your discounted rate.
Families who qualify for a full waiver will be eligible for free tuition at SMMS and for private lessons at Powers Music School.
Saturday Morning Music School (SMMS) - optional program
In addition, families may choose to enroll in Saturday Morning Music School (SMMS), which has been a valuable part of the Belmont Public Schools music program for 35 years. SMMS is an optional program that provides additional group lessons and the opportunity for beginning string players to play in an orchestra. The Belmont Public Schools partner with Powers Music School to deliver instruction on Saturday mornings.
