Grade 5 Music Information

date 9/9/2021

Fifth Grade is a very exciting year for students in the Belmont Public Schools music program. This is the first grade where every student has the opportunity to participate in one of our large ensemble programs: Band, Chorus or Orchestra. Each ensemble includes four days of music instruction per six-day cycle, with two days of large ensemble rehearsal and two days of smaller-group instruction.

Until students have selected their ensemble for the year, their schedule will have a placeholder music class that may say something like “Instrumental Music/Band”. HAVE NO FEAR. Once your child has selected their instrument/ensemble, they will be in the right place for either Band, Chorus or Orchestra. The title of their music class on their current schedule is irrelevant.

Many students who select Orchestra will have played a string instrument in Grade 4, but that should not discourage students who are interested in beginning a string instrument from signing up in Grade 5. Instrument choices for Orchestra include:

  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Cello
  • String Bass

We are so happy to be able to offer our full spectrum of Band instruments this year. Students will be provided with Musician Masks, which allow them to play wind instruments while remaining masked. We will also provide instrument bell covers for instruments that may produce additional aerosol spray from the bell of the instrument.

Our Band program begins in Grade 5 with woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Instrument choices for Band include:

  • Flute
  • Oboe
  • Clarinet
  • Bassoon
  • Alto Saxophone
  • Trumpet
  • French Horn
  • Trombone
  • Euphonium/Tuba
  • Percussion

Finally, students may choose to sing in the Grade 5 Chorus. The only instrument that they will require for chorus is their own voice.

Registration and Rental Fees for Band & Orchestra

There are some costs and fees associated with participation in Band and Orchestra. Fee waivers, reductions, scholarship instruments and even free private lessons are available to families who qualify for financial assistance, so please inquire if you require assistance.

BPS Participation Fee……………….……………...........$250 (Grade 4-5 only)

*Instrument Rental……………………….…………………$25-75/month (Interest free, rent-to-own)

Saturday Morning Music School (optional).......$250 and up

*One important note about instrument rentals: David French Music is the vendor we have selected to provide instrument rentals directly to our students. You are not required to rent your instrument from David French Music. There are a number of vendors in  the area that will rent instruments to you, but David French Music is the only vendor that will deliver instruments directly to your school, pick up instruments for repair, and the only vendor that will operate a Rental Day for our schools.

Making Your Selection

The CMS Music teachers will present all of these options to students during the first weeks of school. Please discuss these options with your 5th Grader. At the end of the first cycle of school days we will e-mail home a form that you will use to make your final selection, along with information about how to rent your instrument if you need to do so.
