Deadline Approaching for Grade 5 Music Selection

date 9/8/2020

Chenery Middle School - Grade 5 Music

In Grade 5 each student will select either Band, Chorus or Orchestra for their year-long music experience.

In a typical CMS schedule each activity includes two large ensemble rehearsals and two smaller group lessons. Each 5th grader attends a music class four times per cycle, regardless of which ensemble they elect to participate in. To begin this year all of these lessons will be taught remotely, including beginning instrument lessons. Our hope is that the circumstances will allow us to hold lessons in-person as soon as we are able to return to a more typical school schedule. Students will learn more about these options during their regularly scheduled music classes once school begins. We ask that you make a selection by Sept. 25, at which time we will separate students into ensembles during their music classes.

Here is some information you will find helpful as you talk to your 5th Grader about their music selection:

CHORUS

The goal of the Grade 5 Chorus program is to help students develop their singing skills and music literacy (note reading) in a fun and supportive setting. The smaller class sessions for chorus will focus on development of vocal technique and music literacy, while the ensemble rehearsals will center around the selected performance repertoire.

  • There is NO Participation Fee required for Chorus.
  • Students do not need to rent instruments for Chorus.

BAND & ORCHESTRA

Many students played a string instrument in Grade 4, and they have the option of continuing their study in the Grade 5 Orchestra. Another option for students will be to begin on a new Band instrument. (Students may also start as beginners on string instruments if they choose.) The smaller “group lessons” focus on specific instrument technique and music literacy, while the large band/orchestra rehearsals focus on building ensemble skills and working on selected repertoire.

String Instrument options (Orchestra)

  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Cello
  • Bass

Band Instrument options*

  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone

*Students who elect to play an instrument are required to pay the BPS Grade 4-5 Instrumental Music Fee ($250), or apply for a fee waiver or reduction (see below)

*Families who qualify for a fee waiver or reduction will also receive a free or reduced cost rental instrument through our vendor, David French Music. They are also eligible for the Belmont Scholars Program through Powers Music School, where they can enroll in free or reduced tuition private lessons.

*Instruments can be rented online through our vendor, David French Music, and will be delivered to Belmont. You may acquire an instrument elsewhere, but only David French Music will deliver to our schools.

*Please note that we are limiting the instrument options for 5th Grade Beginning Band this year due to the remote start. Once we are able to return to a more normal school schedule students will have the option to switch to a band instrument that is not listed here (oboe, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, euphonium, percussion). If your student is interested in one of those instruments, starting on flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone will set them up for success. Please confer with your music teacher about which specific instrument would be the best option for you.

To select your Grade 5 Music Ensemble:

  1. Complete this form. If you selected Chorus, you are DONE.
  2. Pay the Grade 4-5 Instrumental Music Fee or apply for a Fee Waiver (Band & Orchestra ONLY)
  3. Rent your instrument from David French Music if you need one. *Contact Arto Asadoorian, aasadoorian@belmont.k12.ma.us, if you believe you qualify for a free or reduced price instrument rental.
  4. Contact Powers Music School if you are interested in the Belmont Scholars Program.

If you are selecting Band or Orchestra we ask that you rent your instrument online no later than Sept. 28 in order to ensure that your instrument is delivered in time for your first lesson.
