Music from the African Diaspora
Belmont High School Orchestra
Margot Reavey, director
Nathaniel Meyer (BHS '09), guest conductor
Thursday, October 17 - 7:00 PM - BHS Auditorium
Join the Belmont High School Orchestra and special guest conductor, Nathaniel Meyer (BHS '09) for a special evening of Music from the African Diaspora. The program will feature works by traditionally underrepresented composers: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), a English composer of mixed race whose father was an American slave, freed by the British during the Revolutionary War; William Grant Still (1895-1978), the first African-American ever to conduct a major symphony orchestra; and Margaret Bonds (1913-1972), an African-American pianist and composer whose works were salvaged in the most incredible and heartbreaking way. The BHS Orchestra will perform her piece dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, The Montgomery Variations, for only the second time anywhere in the world.
Admission to this concert is FREE, made possible through the generosity of Parents of Music Students (POMS). For more information, contact Margot Reavey, BHS/CMS Orchestra director: mreavey@belmont.k12.ma.us.
