Chenery Middle School Update February 14, 2022

February 14, 2022

Dear CMS Community,

I wanted to make you aware of three bias incidents that happened last week.

  1. The N-word was found written on a bathroom wall in the 8th grade boys bathroom.

  2. A 5th grade student who did not understand his actions, pulled off a friend’s hijab at recess.

  3. An 8th grade Chinese American boy was yelled at with racial slurs from the bus of the Watertown boys basketball team.

In all instances, we completed investigations, spoke to and met with parents, and, in the last instance, contacted the administration in Watertown. For students we could identify, discipline and restorative work has taken place. As a school community, we strongly condemn all bias incidents and stand in support of those communities who are targeted. If any student would benefit from additional support, we encourage them to connect with their guidance counselors and/or administrators.

Our students are demonstrating the need to develop awareness, empathy and understanding around race, culture, gender, and identity. In the coming weeks, in conjunction with our teacher led Equity Team at CMS, we will be addressing the following topics in our Wednesday announcements:

  • Microaggressions - What are they? What do they look and sound like?

  • Microaggressions - Review microaggressions that some of our own students and staff have experienced. We will include one from a 6th grade student who experienced another student telling her that he would pull off her hijab during a P.E. class. She will share her thoughts with our school and town communities.

  • Hateful Symbols and Speech - What are they? Reasons we cannot tolerate or use them.

I struggle with ongoing messaging about these incidents. There is a need to inform; however, for some families it is re-traumatizing. This is difficult work, and it requires a tenacious and often uncomfortable perseverance as we lean in and learn how to live alongside one another productively and compassionately. Thank you for your continued partnership.

Respectfully,

Karla B. Koza, Principal

MENTOR MATCH FROM BELMONT PUBLIC LIBRARY

Mentor Match is a free academic mentoring program hosted by Belmont Public Library for students in grades 6-10. Students are paired with a volunteer mentor from BHS to help them once a week for one hour either in a virtual session or in-person and masked at the library. Each match lasts for as long as the mentor's schedule allows and they are welcome to explore any subject their mentor feels comfortable with. Students or their parents can register here: https://belmontpubliclibrary.net/2021/08/03/mentor-match/  If you are a student who is interested in becoming a volunteer mentor, please complete a Tutor Profile here: https://forms.gle/JbkhLdbzt91DnEnC6

TUTORING OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS IN QUARANTINE

The Belmont Public Schools offers tutoring to students who are in quarantine or isolation due to COVID and not able to attend school.

  • Tutoring services are delivered virtually for up to 10 days per student
  • Tutoring referrals are made once the need for quarantine is determined.  However, as it takes a few days to process a referral and arrange a tutor, the tutoring may not actually begin until students return to school given the short 5-day quarantine.  In cases like this, the tutoring will focus more on academic support for transitioning back into the classroom vs provision of curriculum/instruction while the student is absent.
  • Tutors coordinate content and materials directly with the classroom teacher

During the initial communication with the school nurse related to quarantine you will be asked about your interest in tutoring for your student.
