Chenery Middle School Update - Week of October 31, 2021

October 31, 2021

Dear CMS Community,

I hope all our families are having a wonderful weekend.

Thank you to the many families who follow our sometimes confusing traffic patterns to drop off and pick up students at school each day. We are still having challenges with some parents who are driving into our parking lot while busses are there before and after school. This is not allowed and is a safety hazard for children and staff. Please know you may drop your child a few yards from school and they will safely be able to enter. We have many adults around campus each morning and afternoon that can help usher your child if needed. We also encourage all students to walk or bike to school when possible. It’s great exercise, fresh air, and cuts down on harmful emissions and traffic pile up. We appreciate your help.

In addition, please reference the information below surrounding the BPS equity audit and participation by students and families this week. This is an important vehicle to best understand how all community members experience equity or lack thereof in our schools. Please take a few moments to learn more about this important work below.

Wishing all of our students and their families a happy and safe Halloween.

Best Regards,

Karla B. Koza, Principal

EQUITY AUDIT PHASE II

In early October, Chon’tel Washington, our BPS Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) announced the start of Phase II of Equity Audit. You can find that announcement as well as survey questions here. In an effort to gather a cross section of input from all stakeholders, the auditors will conduct surveys, conduct 1:1 interviews, and provide an open forum for focus groups.

Family Focus Groups

We aim to collect input from family focus groups to further clarify how equity lives in our culture and district. With any feedback shared, all participant identities will remain confidential and any data presented will be done so anonymously.

  • Family focus groups will last 90 minutes and will take place on Monday, November 1st first session is at 12:00-1:30pm Zoom Link HERE. The second session is from 5:30-7:00pm Zoom Link HERE.
  • Any CMS family is welcome to join either session.

Surveys

Student surveys will be administered to all students at CMS on Wednesday, November 3rd during Homeroom. You may view the survey HERE. If you wish to opt out your child from participation in student surveys, please click here.

Interviews

A variety of interview opportunities will be offered in order to better understand the individual voices of students and staff (teachers, administrators, school counselors, and school leaders) about their experience with equity, inclusion, belonging, and success in the Belmont Public Schools.

  • Interviews with students will take place on Thursday, November 4th from 1:30pm-4:50pm
  • 1:1 student interview will last for 20 minutes.
  • Sample student interview questions can be found here
  • If you wish to have your child participate in the 1:1 interview with our auditors, click HERE to register your child for a time slot.
  • Please be sure to fill out a consent form to enable your child to participate. It can be viewed here.
  • All participant identities will remain confidential and any data will be presented as anonymous.

We hope that all BPS stakeholders will take part in this critical work to better understand BPS culture as it relates to equity. Your voice will help us make improvements that allow all students to have equitable access to education and an experience that lifts all students. If you have any questions, please direct them to Ms. Chon'tel Washington at cwashington@belmont.k12.ma.us.

REOCCURING NEWS & RESOURCES

CMS IS UNDERSTAFFED - YOUR HELP NEEDED

We continue to experience a shortage of professional aides, building substitutes and cafeteria staff. This impacts students directly in meeting educational needs, having needed support in large classes, having to pull professional aides to cover classes when teachers are absent, and students needing to wait longer to get lunch. If you or someone you know is interested in working in our school I encourage you to apply. CLICK HERE to learn more.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS FOR PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Belmont Public Schools are currently implementing vaccine mandates for all educators and staff. We are continuing to prioritize ensuring high vaccination rates amongst all adults who work in our schools. The Belmont Public Schools encourages all families, students, staff, and school community members who are eligible to get vaccinated.

As presented at the Belmont School Committee meeting on September 21, 2021, anyone –including parents and family members who wish to volunteer in our school buildings during the 2021-2022 school year – will need to show proof of vaccination. Volunteer may scan or provide a photocopy (or email a photo) to the school administrative assistant when checking in at the school’s main office for the first time this year. Additionally, Individuals who plan to volunteer in any of the district schools can email a PDF or photo of their vaccination card directly to Human Resources (rleeb@belmont.k12.ma.us) in advance of their first volunteer date. All vaccination card copies will be kept securely under lock and key, and individual vaccination status will be handled confidentially by the school and central administration staff.

 BPS Health Protocols

There are updated guidelines and protocols that are important for families to review to understand what happens when a student presents symptoms of COVID, tests positive for COVID, or is determined to be a close contact. Please check the BPS Nursing Page on a regular basis. Details on the Test and Stay protocol can be found HERE.

It is critically important to review and complete a symptom checker (found HERE) if your child is exhibiting any COVID19 symptoms. Please do not send your child to school sick..

Please encourage your child to bring a water bottle each day. We have filling stations but not access to traditional bubblers.

Cheetah Spot
Does your child ride a school bus or can’t make it to the store when it is open? If so, they can pick up a green order form outside of the school store and follow the directions on the form. Students can use the order form to place and receive an order so they don’t miss the bus.
