Chenery Middle School Update - Week of September 19, 2021

September 19, 2021

Dear CMS Community,

We finished our first full week of school and are ready to take on the next. It has been a pleasure getting to know your children again and seeing all the connecting and learning happening in our vibrant school.

We are excited to have families visit us virtually to learn more about your child’s experience at CMS at our Back to School Night. It will be held virtually on Wednesday, September 29 from 6:00-8:00PM. The format includes a whole school welcome and the opportunity for families to virtually meet their children’s core and encore teachers. Teachers will present information on the content of their classes as well as what makes their classroom communities special.  I will forward the schedule and accompanying virtual meeting links next week.

As we finished the first week, we were disappointed to see some destruction of bathrooms at CMS. You may have seen on social media, a disturbing trend of a challenge to vandalize schools. It began on TikTok and unfortunately has made its way into our school. It’s called the “'Devious Lick' TikTok Challenge” and it encourages students to vandalize bathrooms and steal from school.  At this point, we have experienced damaged soap and paper towel dispensers, but we want to ensure it does not continue. Please talk to your child about this destructive challenge as well as following any online trend that involves vandalism, hurting others, or taking unnecessary risks. These acts do not align with our core value of RESPECT.

I look forward to a busy learning week ahead. Enjoy the beautiful weather.

Best Regards,

Karla B. Koza

BPS Health Protocols

There are updated guidelines and protocols that are important for families to review to understand what happens when a student presents symptoms of COVID, tests positive for COVID, or is determined to be a close contact. Please check the BPS Nursing Page on a regular basis. Details on the Test and Stay protocol can be found HERE.

It is critically important to review and complete a symptom checker (found HERE) if your child is exhibiting any COVID19 symptoms. Please do not send your child to school sick.

There is also information about pool testing. The most effective pool testing occurs when as many students are part of the testing as possible. CMS currently has 43% participation through the parent waiver. Please consider helping us with this important strategy to keep students in school and learning with each other. If your student is signed up for this program and is identified as a close contact of someone in a school-based setting who has Covid, they will be allowed to take part in the test and stay program. If they are NOT signed up for the program, they will have to go home and quarantine as per our Covid health protocols. Click HERE for the Superintendent’s update.

Please encourage your child to bring a water bottle each day. We have filling stations but not access to traditional bubblers.

After School Opportunities for Students

Please see our website HERE to learn more about school and PTO sponsored clubs and activities. We are still working on final details for some clubs. To register or apply for a fee waiver, print and fill out The Application Form. You may pay the activities fee with a check made out the Town of Belmont at the CMS main office or online here.

Traffic and Parking Lot Reminders

Thank you to our families as we adjust to our new traffic pattern. We appreciate your support as we try a new way to help our students be and feel safe.

Our biking community kindly requests that parents dropping off please not park and block the curb cuts and crosswalks so bikers are able to safely navigate.

Parents are NOT allowed to drop off or pick up their children in our parking lot. This disrupts bus flow and presents a safety risk for students. Please do not PARK in the lot during drop of and pick up. We have very limited spaces which must be available for staff and faculty. Thank you for your help.

Parent Drop Off Procedure CHANGE!

Last school year, we had far more parent drop off vehicles around the school each morning than in previous years. This created traffic and safety concerns. This summer the CMS administrative team worked with the Belmont Police Department to find a safer route system.

Most important to note that the intersection of Washington, Goden, and Oakely will be BLOCKED.

All traffic will be diverted from Washington street to multiple side streets to alleviate some congestion and most importantly, create safer conditions for our students as they navigate crossing streets to get to school. Please be mindful of speed and pay attention to police detail who will help you learn our new system.

Bus Registration

A reminder to register your child for the bus transportation this year. As you may recall, the roads around CMS were extremely crowded last year due to a large increase in parent drop off/pick up. Please consider bus transportation or walking to school to alleviate congestion and potentially dangerous conditions for our student walkers.

If you require busing and have not yet registered your child, you may inquire by emailing busing@belmont.k12.ma.us. We will continue to register students while seating is available.

Please note that BPS will not register additional bus students during the period beginning Monday, September 6th through Friday, September 17th. Registration will resume on Monday, September 20th and continue while seating remains available. For additional transportation information, please visit: www.belmont.k12.ma.us/bps/bus-faq or email busing@belmont./k12.ma.us
