June 13, 2021
Dear CMS Community,
It is hard to believe we are ending the 2020-2021 school year. This year has seemed like five, yet now with three days remaining, it seems to have snuck up on us.
Vaccination #2 Tomorrow
If your child is receiving a second vaccination tomorrow, please be sure your child has his/her/their vaccination card as well as the signed consent form.
Grade 8 Move Up
We are so incredibly proud of our 8th graders who are moving up and onto high school. It has been especially challenging for this class as they have not had the opportunity to experience the traditions of the past for their last year at CMS. We are very much looking forward to our Move Up day on Wednesday. The PTO and teachers at CMS have a special day planned. Families can join us by watching it live through Belmont Media. All details are below.
Students in grades 5-7 will retain their Chromebooks for the summer. Grade 8 will return their Chromebook on the last day of school. They will be receiving new devices as they enter high school.
School Leadership Changes
As you may be aware, Jodie Cohen, Assistant Principal of the Upper School is departing to become the Principal of Kennedy Middle School in Natick. Jonathan Hartunian, AP of the Lower School, has recently accepted the role of Principal of John Glenn Middle School in Bedford. I want to extend my deepest appreciation and gratitude to both of them for their dedicated and unwavering service to the students, faculty and staff at CMS. Their assistance, support, and willingness to do whatever it took to keep our big school going was invaluable to me this year. Nicolette Foundas has been appointed as the Lower School Assistant Principal. We are in the process of conducting a search for AP of Encore & Student Programming and will begin the search for AP of the Upper School as well.
As we close out the school year, I want to thank the families of CMS for their ongoing patience, input, feedback and support. As a new principal during a pandemic, it has certainly been a challenge. However, this community - the parents, faculty, staff, and, most importantly, the students, have shown me what a truly special place Chenery Middle School is. I also want to thank the PTO and it’s co-presidents, Laura VanderHart and Jenny Kresse, for their support, positive energy, and care for CMS.
I wish all members of our school community a wonderful summer filled with activities that you have missed and are more than ready to do. Happy Summer!

Here are a few links to check if any extra yearbooks are still available, if you already pre-ordered a yearbook, or if you recently purchased one of the extra copies.
Chenery School Store
The school store is officially closed for the summer. It will reopen again fully stocked and ready to rock in September 2021! The school store carries a wide array of items (such as - large assortment of school supplies, school spirit wear, umbrellas, stress relievers, snacks, drinks, binders, yearbooks, event tickets, and more).
2021-22 School Supply Starter Boxes
If you ordered a starter box of school supplies with the Chenery Student Council, it will be placed in your child’s homeroom ready for them to receive by the first day of school (September 9, 2021). The pre-ordering deadline was June 4th. No additional orders are being accepted. A few extra boxes will be available in the school store on Sept 9th, sold on a first come, first serve basis. SUMMER STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD
As we look to a prolonged break over the summer, we are urging students and families to think simple and fun in order to help our students recharge and be ready for learning in September.
Take A Break! Stay off screens -
Avoid group chats and social media.
See friends in person when possible and safe.
Read! Check out the summer reading lists or pick up something you enjoy.
Play! Click HERE for more ideas around the critical need for play for our students.
DOES YOUR CHILD NEED AN AGENDA BOOK NEXT YEAR?
Given that all students now have Chromebooks and much of their work and homework is located on Google Classroom, the need for a hard copy of a calendar/agenda book has decreased. However, we know some students do well with a hard copy. If you’d like your child to be given an agenda book at the start of the school year, please fill out THIS form. This will help us determine the number we should order. Thank you.
CELL PHONE POLICY AT CMS
Students are not allowed to use their cell phones during school hours. The policy for cell phones at school is “off and away.” This is an important way that we can help students stay focused and off an unnecessary screen during the school day. This includes texting with family. Students MAY use their phones after dismissal. We would appreciate your reinforcement of this policy at home. Thank you
GRADE 5 PUBERTY LESSONS
We will not be able to hold our grade 5 puberty lessons this year, however, as we know, the onset of puberty will not wait until these lessons are held in 6th grade. As parents are the first line of support for their children, our health department educators wanted to share materials to help parents facilitate a conversation with their child until this topic is covered in Grade 6. These lessons will occur during either semester 1 or 2 depending on when a student has health. Ms. Frender and Ms. Membrino-Hutton have provided a Screencastify video that shares an overview of the puberty lessons (Overview of Puberty Lessons) as well as a list of resources for the parents to help facilitate their conversations (Resources).
BELMONT SUMMER ENRICHMENT IS COMING!
Are you looking for fun, educational opportunities for you children this summer? If so, Belmont Summer Enrichment is a great choice for you! Some of our courses include Engineering, Coding, Sports, Improv, Graphic Design, and Art Creations and many are taught by our own BPS teachers. As always, please call the attendance line to report any absence.
Lower School Attendance Line: 617-993-5822
Upper School Attendance Line: 617-993-5832
Parents MUST call the upper or lower school offices to dismiss a child. An email to a teacher or a text to a child is not in line with our official policy and/or need to ensure we have accurate attendance and awareness of every student in the building. This is a safety concern. Please do not come to the school without a phone call prior. We appreciate your help with these important processes.
In addition, as our schedule has changed, there is no longer an option to remote into classes for any reason other than those that are COVID related. If a student is in quarantine, please be in contact with our nursing staff and the upper or lower school office to inform us of that.
