June 6, 2021
Dear CMS Community,
The last full week of school is ahead of us and it will be very warm. Please be sure to help your child prepare for warm classrooms with a refillable water bottle, light clothing, and multiple masks. As the superintendent stated in his update on Friday, we will continue to monitor the weather and heat index in our building.
This is our last week of MCAS testing. It will be for our remote learners and make-up testing for students who were absent. Please contact Assistant Principal, Jodie Cohen with questions.
Wishing everyone a great week ahead. Stay cool!

Remote students will be taking MCAS during their own timeframe so that we may provide adequate proctoring, operational, and technological support during testing. After remote test training from DESE and conversations about implementation, remote testing simultaneously with in person testing was “not recommended so that test administrators can appropriately monitor students and manage the test setup in PearsonAccess Next”.
Below is the schedule for the last week of MCAS:
SUMMER READING IS HERE!
Please click on the links below to get started on summer reading 2021.
Grade 6 Summer Reading
Grades 7 & 8 Summer Reading
DOES YOUR CHILD NEED AN AGENDA BOOK NEXT YEAR?
Given that all students now have Chromebooks and much of their work and homework is located on Google Classroom, the need for a hard copy of a calendar/agenda book has decreased. However, we know some students do well with a hard copy. If you’d like your child to be given an agenda book at the start of the school year, please fill out THIS form. This will help us determine the number we should order. Thank you.
CELL PHONE POLICY AT CMS
Students are not allowed to use their cell phones during school hours. The policy for cell phones at school is “off and away.” This is an important way that we can help students stay focused and off an unnecessary screen during the school day. This includes texting with family. Students MAY use their phones after dismissal. We would appreciate your reinforcement of this policy at home. Thank you
8th GRADE INFORMATION
Field Day: Friday, June 11 (Rain Date June 15)
Students will rotate through outdoor activities by team. Opportunities for our remote only students to connect will be available. The CMS PTO and faculty are working together to make this a fun afternoon.
-Students will rotate by team through 3 stations of outdoor activities.
-Parents will run all activities and teachers will supervise.
Grade 7 Parent Help Requested by PTO
Due to the circumstances of this CRAZY year, the 8th graders at Chenery will be having an 8thGrade Field Day instead of the traditional 8th Grade Party. It's a Chenery tradition for the 7th grade parents to help run the 8th grade year-end party (and this year that party is a Field Day!). We need about 40 parents and 2 photographers to make this year's field day a success. Please help out if you can. It will be LOTS of fun and mean so much to these Chenery "seniors" in the absence of their 8thGrade Party. …Oh, and did I mention there will be a bungee run?! So bring your sunscreen and (pretty please) help make this year just as much of a success as you will want for your rising 8thgraders next year.

GRADE 5 PUBERTY LESSONS
We will not be able to hold our grade 5 puberty lessons this year, however, as we know, the onset of puberty will not wait until these lessons are held in 6th grade. As parents are the first line of support for their children, our health department educators wanted to share materials to help parents facilitate a conversation with their child until this topic is covered in Grade 6. These lessons will occur during either semester 1 or 2 depending on when a student has health. Ms. Frender and Ms. Membrino-Hutton have provided a Screencastify video that shares an overview of the puberty lessons (Overview of Puberty Lessons) as well as a list of resources for the parents to help facilitate their conversations (Resources).
NEWS FROM THE PTO

We are putting together a 5th Grade Time Capsule to capture memories in a year the 5th graders will never forget. We are asking for individual submissions and ideas for items to put into the capsule. Individual submissions can be sent here using this form. Ideas for items can be sent here.
The items and a thumb drive with written submissions will be put into a capsule with the label "Belmont Class of 2028 - Fifth Grade Time Capsule" and opened when this class graduates from the Belmont Public Schools.
Questions can be sent to Susan Burgess-Cox at firstname.lastname@example.org
ART WORK RETURN (19-20 SCHOOL YEAR)
Grade 6-8 students will be given the opportunity to collect their artwork from last year, which hasn’t been able to be collected due to the pandemic. Students will need to come to school with a bag and be given the opportunity to collect the art work in the cafeteria during their WIN blocks on Wednesday, June 9th.

As we approach the end of the school year, we will be asking for parent input around placement for your child. We will send separate communication that walks you through the process and areas of consideration that you will find helpful. Please click HERE for more information and the form for your input.

As we look to a prolonged break over the summer, we are urging students and families to think simple and fun in order to help our students recharge and be ready for learning in September
Take A Break! Stay off screens
Avoid group chats and social media.
See friends in person when possible and safe.
Read! Check out the summer reading lists or pick up something you enjoy.
Play! Click HERE for more ideas around the critical need for play for our students.
LEAVING THE DISTRICT - CHROMEBOOK RETURN
The parent can return the chromebook and charger any day to Belmont High School between 8am-3pm. There is a table to the right of the greeter's desk with a blue "Return" bin underneath. They can place the chromebook and charger in the bin.
UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS
UPCOMING LGBTQ+ EVENTS for May and June, 2021
The 2nd Annual Pride Parade will take place on June 12th at 1 pm. (IN PERSON!)
RETURN TO FULL TIME LEARNING - ATTENDANCE
As always, please call the attendance line to report any absence.
Lower School Attendance Line: 617-993-5822
Upper School Attendance Line: 617-993-5832
Parents MUST call the upper or lower school offices to dismiss a child. An email to a teacher or a text to a child is not in line with our official policy and/or need to ensure we have accurate attendance and awareness of every student in the building. This is a safety concern. Please do not come to the school without a phone call prior. We appreciate your help with these important processes.
In addition, as our schedule has changed, there is no longer an option to remote into classes for any reason other than those that are COVID related. If a student is in quarantine, please be in contact with our nursing staff and the upper or lower school office to inform us of that.
