May 23, 2021
Dear CMS Community,
I hope everyone enjoyed the summer-like temperatures this weekend. It has been wonderful outdoor lunch and recess weather.
A reminder that the first dose of the COVID vaccination is being offered to students tomorrow. Students may NOT be vaccinated unless they have a signed consent form. Please be sure to see details below for any information you may need.
As the weather gets warmer, a reminder to have students bring in a water bottle. There are water filling stations at our water fountains now that make refilling easy throughout the day.
Have a wonderful week ahead.

MCAS UPDATE - GRADE 6 THIS WEEK
GRADE 6 IN PERSON MCAS THIS WEEK
Thursday, May 27th - ELA MCAS Testing, 8:00 - 10:30am
Friday, May 28th - MATH MCAS Testing, 8:00 - 9:30am
MCAS is set to begin for Grade 6 this upcoming Thursday. Please make sure that your 6th grader(s) has breakfast or a snack before coming to school.
Grade 6 and 7 remote only students will be provided with asynchronous work during MCAS blocks, while their in-person peers are testing.
If you chose to have your remote student test in person (as requested in the survey sent out April 26th), please have your student at Chenery by 7:55am. They will meet their assigned proctor in the LOWER SCHOOL OFFICE and will be escorted to their testing room. When they finish, the school will call you to pick up your student. If you DID NOT choose to have your remote student take the test in person during the survey on April 26th, your student was defaulted to REMOTE TESTING during the REMOTE TESTING DATES below.
Grades 6 - 8 remote students will be taking MCAS remotely on the following dates as indicated in the MCAS calendar below:
STE - June 4
ELA - June 7
MATH - June 8
Remote students and remote student families will be receiving further instructions regarding access to the testNav site, as well log in credentials directly from the technology department. Stay tuned for further details in the coming weeks.
Remote students will be taking MCAS during their own timeframe so that we may provide adequate proctoring, operational, and technological support during testing. After remote test training from DESE and conversations about implementation, remote testing simultaneously with in person testing was “not recommended so that test administrators can appropriately monitor students and manage the test setup in PearsonAccess Next”.
Below is the schedule for MCAS testing at CMS. Each grade will be testing for one week only (2 or 3 days, depending on grade level). We will provide additional information as we get closer to testing dates.
CELL PHONE POLICY AT CMS
The policy for cell phones at school is “off and away.” This is an important way that we can help students stay focused and off an unnecessary screen during the school day. This includes texting with friends and family. We would appreciate your reinforcement of this policy at home. Thank you.
MESSAGE FROM YOUR SCHOOL NURSES
Please have your child bring a water bottle to school every day. The water fountains are not operational.
If your child is sick, please call the absence line AND fill out the absence form HERE. Your child can not return to school until cleared by a nurse. Please submit a PCR test to the nurse, if requested to do so. If your child is sent to school prior to this clearance, you will be required to make arrangements to pick your child up from school.
Reminder, if your student is to be dismissed for medical reasons, we ask that you make arrangements to dismiss your student within 30 minutes.
Students will be outside more often. Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather and apply sunblock at home. Please make sure your student’s mask is well fitting.
The Nursing Health and Safety Protocols can be found at BPS nursing-health-and-safety. This site is updated often.
8th GRADE TRANSITION & MOVING UP SAVE THE DATE
Grade 8 students will celebrate their moving up to grade 9 with two events in June.
Field Day: Friday, June 11 (Rain Date June 15)
Students will rotate through outdoor activities by team. Opportunities for our remote only students to connect will be available. The CMS PTO and faculty are working together to make this a fun afternoon. Details coming.
Move Up Ceremony: Wednesday, June 16
This event is virtual with the final component on our field for a photo. This is a student only event. Details coming.
STUDENT PLACEMENT 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR
As we approach the end of the school year, we will be asking for parent input around placement for your child. We will send separate communication that walks you through the process and areas of consideration that you will find helpful. Please click HERE for more information and the form for your input.
ATTENDANCE & DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
As always, please call the attendance line to report any absence.
Lower School Attendance Line: 617-993-5822
Upper School Attendance Line: 617-993-5832
Parents MUST call the upper or lower school offices to dismiss a child. An email to a teacher or a text to a child is not in line with our official policy and/or need to ensure we have accurate attendance and awareness of every student in the building. This is a safety concern. Please do not come to the school without a phone call prior. We appreciate your help with these important processes.
In addition, as our schedule has changed, there is no longer an option to remote into classes for any reason other than those that are COVID related. If a student is in quarantine, please be in contact with our nursing staff and the upper or lower school office to inform us of that.

The school store is open! Are you in need of school supplies (pencils, pens, binders, notebooks, and much more), Chenery clothing, yearbooks (past years and current year), gadgets, umbrellas, and much more. Check out the school store on the 1st floor near the auditorium. For the remainder of the school year, the school store will be open two days a week - Wednesday and Friday from 2:30-3:00pm. Cheetah Spot Store Order Form
Still in need of a Chenery Yearbook for your student? Extra yearbooks are still available to purchase from the school store or directly from Mr. Dyer in room 117 for $22. Can’t make it to the school store, print the EXTRA YEARBOOK ORDER FORM and give directly to Mr. Dyer in room 117. Yearbooks will be distributed on June 15/16. Additional details will be emailed and announced as the date gets closer. Here are a few links to check if any extra yearbooks are available, if you already pre-ordered a yearbook, or if you recently purchased one of the extra copies.
2021-22 School Supply Starter Boxes
Want to avoid the rush for school supplies? Last year, Student Council organized 400 school supply boxes for Chenery students. This is a great way to save time and money by purchasing a starter box of supplies through us today! See links below for ordering details. The same list below are the same shared throughout the summer with school team placement letters and on the Chenery website (under Resources and For Families). All supply boxes will be in the students homeroom on the 1st day of school. The deadline to pre-order a School Supply Starter Box is June 4, 2021

VIRTUAL BOOK FAIR HAPPENING NOW
REMOTING INTO CLASS RULES
We are seeing students choose to stay home for a variety of reasons and remote into classes. The ONLY reason students are allowed to change from in person learning to remote is if there is a COVID related health reason. Regular illness, oversleeping, or “not feeling like it” are not acceptable reasons to remote into class. Teachers have been instructed to dismiss students from virtual meetings if they have not been cleared by the nurse and administration to attend remotely.
As our CMS Guide states: In grades 6 - 8, students who must quarantine will have their schedule adjusted to attend the streaming classes on their team. All other students not approved for quarantine will be marked absent and need to make up work as in prior school years. Students may not elect to remote into classes for any reason outside of those that are COVID related. The transition to remote learning may take 24 hours.
Students who are absent due to a vaccination appointment are to take a sick day(s) as needed. Teachers will work with students to make up missed work.
We would also ask that you do not ask the nurse or teachers permission to allow your child to remote in for any other reason than COVID. Thank you.
