Chenery Middle School Update - May 2, 2021

Chenery Update -Week of October 5th, 2020

May 2, 2021

Dear CMS Community,

We are back! It was great to have all of our students return to full time learning. We are still working out kinks in our routines, streaming, and the lunch process and we anticipate a smoother week ahead.

We will follow the CMS Spring 2021 Schedule for the remainder of the school year. For information on all facets of this full return, please refer to the CMS Return To Full Time Guide 2021. It is important to understand the adjustments to attendance now that we are in this final model. Please see details within the guide and below.

As we close out the year, there will be many moving parts including MCAS testing administration, student placement for next year, and celebrating the moving up of our 8th graders to high school. We will continue to update you on all of those aspects.

Last, I hope you take a moment this week to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. The effort and care with which all of our faculty and staff have operated during this past school year is nothing short of extraordinary. Now, more than ever, educators deserve recognition.

I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. Looks like a wet week ahead. Please have your children wear warm jackets if they are scheduled to have lunch in the tent.

Have a great week!

Best Regards,

Karla B. Koza

Principal

RETURN TO FULL TIME LEARNING - ATTENDANCE

As always, please call the attendance line to report any absence.

Lower School Attendance Line:  617-993-5822

Upper School Attendance Line:  617-993-5832

In addition, as our schedule has changed, there is no longer an option to remote into classes for any reason other than those that are COVID related. If a student is in quarantine, please be in contact with our nursing staff and the upper or lower school office to inform us of that. As our CMS Guide states:

In grades 6 - 8, students who must quarantine will have their schedule adjusted to attend the streaming classes on their team.  All other students not approved for quarantine will be marked absent and need to make up work as in prior school years.  Students may not elect to remote into classes for any reason outside of those that are COVID related. The transition to remote learning may take 24 hours.

Students in grade 5 are provided with tutoring services. Please see the guide for more detailed information.

CMS LUNCH MENU AND PROCEDURE

Students may opt for a free lunch from our cafeteria for the remainder of the school year. At the start of each school day, students will fill out a Google Form with their choice for the day. To review the menu for the rest of the year, CLICK HERE. To understand how lunch will work at CMS, click HERE.

PLEASE NO PARKING IN OUR LOT

Now that school is in session full time, we ask that parents please NOT park in our school lot for any reason during the hours of 7:00-2:30PM. We appreciate your help with this.

WORLD LANGUAGE SELECTION FOR GRADE 5

The week of April 26th, all students in grade 5 will learn about the different world language options available at Chenery with their team teachers. Students and parents/guardians will be given the opportunity to indicate student world language preferences the week of May 3rd.  Please review the world language presentation and parent letter.  More information will be provided Monday, May 3rd from Nicolette Foundas, Assistant Principal of Encore Programming.

MCAS UPDATE

All students grades 5-8 are required to take MCAS this year. HERE is a document from DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) that outlines the timeline for testing. DESE has recently stated that all remote students may take the MCAS remotely.

Below is the schedule for MCAS testing at CMS.  Each grade will be testing for one week only (2 or 3 days, depending on grade level).  We will provide additional information as we get closer to testing dates.

STUDENT PLACEMENT 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR

As we approach the end of the school year, we will be asking for parent input around placement for your child. We will send separate communication that walks you through the process and areas of consideration that you will find helpful.

The placement of students is one of the most important parts of organizing for the upcoming year.  A considerable amount of time, energy, and thought goes into this complex process.  Many factors are considered, including (but not limited to):

Identified Gender

Learning needs

Race

Ethnic background

Social needs

Our goal is to create classes that are well-balanced with groups of children who can work together educationally and socially. Please look for a placement email later in the week.

VIRTUAL ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCE - MUSIC FOR FOOD FUNDRAISER

The Belmont Orchestras proudly present our Virtual Orchestra Performance- Music for Food Fundraiser video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxQMeSvUpy4

In partnership with Music for Food, an international organization that engages and teaches about hunger and food insecurity, the Belmont Orchestra students in grade 6-12 have creatively collaborated on a virtual performance piece, D Major Jam, by Jessie Montgomery. We present this video to our entire Belmont community to raise awareness about hunger, and to raise funds for the Belmont Food Pantry. By sharing our musical talents, we hope to raise funds locally for our community members in need. This fundraiser will be open through May 15, 2021.

Please take a few minutes to watch our video and consider a donation through Music For Food: https://musicforfood.net/index.php/donation/
