Summer Reading Lists 2020

The Summer Reading Lists are a joint project of the Belmont Public Schools and the Belmont Public Library. They are designed to encourage students in Belmont to make reading a habit, raising both their interest in and level of reading. These books and works from authors are available to view in print and as e-books and e-audio books that can be borrowed free of charge from the Belmont Public Library’s collections in Libby and in Hoopla. In order to get started borrowing ebooks and e-audio:

Visit Belmont Public Library. Childrens E-Resources to choose which online service you want to use.

You can also register online for a library card that will allow six months of access to e-books and e-audio books. Register Lbrary card Be sure to sign up for the Library's Summer Reading Program starting in late June. The theme this year is Imagine Your Story!

All middle school students are expected to read over the summer. Please see the links below for grade-specific information:

 Children's Books on Race, Civil Rights, and Activism

The Upper School Summer Reading List is posted to your child’s ELA Google Classroom page and can be accessed here: Reading List for 7th and 8th Graders.

Here are some of the ways your child can access the required and suggested books.

Entering 7th Graders:

  1. Borrow digital copies of the required and suggested summer reading books from your local library through Overdrive. Note: you will need a library card number and access to a digital device.
  2. Rules by Cynthia Lord and Crash by Jerry Spinelli are also available on Open Library. Note: you will need to create an account, but it is free and no library card is required.
  3. If your child chooses to read Legend by Marie Lu, a free PDF of the entire novel is available here: Legend - Marie Lu. Note: you will need a digital device.
  4. Contact your local public library to see if print copies of required and suggested summer reading books are available.
  5. Purchase your own physical or digital copies of the required and suggested summer reading books from a bookseller of your choice. (If you are looking for a suggestion, we like Belmont Books!)

Entering 8th Graders:

  1. Enjoy free access to a PDF of the required summer reading book The Giver. The digital version of the book is available here: The Giver. Note: you will need a digital device.
  2. Borrow digital copies of the required and suggested summer reading books from your local library through Overdrive. Note: you will need a library card number and access to a digital device.
  3. Contact your local public library to see if print copies of required and suggested summer reading books are available.
  4. Purchase your own physical or digital copies of the required and suggested summer reading books from a bookseller of your choice. (If you are looking for a suggestion, we like Belmont Books!)
