Dear Chenery Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! We are excited to get back to school and welcome our Chenery students back into the building. With school starting in a few weeks, I hope that this newsletter will help provide some valuable information that will prepare us all for a safe return to school on Wednesday, September 7th.
Every aspect of our preparation this summer for the upcoming school year has taken into consideration our school motto of being respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. We are excited for a return to school that will provide students with opportunities to be successful and define success that is meaningful to them.
Nicolette Foundas, Interim Principal
New Leadership Team
On August 17th I wrote to update important leadership news for the Chenery Middle School during this upcoming school year.
“As you know from previous correspondences, with my position this year changing to Interim 5-8 Chenery Middle School Principal for the 2022-2023 school year, we had to fill the Lower School Assistant Principal position. We are fortunate to share that Mr. Pete Tausek will be the Interim Lower School Assistant Principal for the 2022-2023 school year.
Mr. Tausek has been an educator in Belmont for 14 years. Six of those years he taught sixth grade, and most recently he has been a seventh grade World Geography teacher for eight years. His experience in both the Lower School and Upper School at Chenery Middle School will serve him well as he works to ensure stability for students, family, and staff through this period of transition.
This open position was posted and both internal and external applicants applied. Last week a hiring committee made up of representatives from Chenery’s school-based leadership team, the Belmont Education Association, a parent representative and a student representative conducted initial interviews, and recommended two candidates to the Superintendent for his consideration. We are thrilled that a candidate of Mr. Tausek’s capacity applied and is willing to take this one-year position on.”
Please join me in congratulating Mr. Pete Tausek in this new interim role.

Parent Drop Off Procedure
To maintain safety with the increase of parent drop off vehicles around the school each morning, the intersection of Washington, Goden, and Oakely will be BLOCKED.
All traffic will be diverted from Washington street to multiple side streets to alleviate some congestion and most importantly, create safer conditions for our students as they navigate crossing streets to get to school. Please be mindful of speed and pay attention to police detail who will help you learn our new system.
If you require busing and have not yet registered your child, you may inquire by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. We will continue to register students while seating is available.
Please note that BPS will not register additional bus students during the following dates: Monday, August 29th through Friday, September 9th. Any student requiring transportation that has not registered prior to the first week of school will not be added to the program until Monday, September 12th. For additional transportation information, please visit: www.belmont.k12.ma.us/bps/bus-faq or email email@example.com.
Attendance Line/ Absences and Dismissals
You may call the attendance lines to report an absence and contact us for support. If we do not hear from you we are required to call you.
- Lower School: (617) 993-5822
- Upper School: (617) 993-5832
A student who needs to be dismissed must be signed out by a parent or guardian. Students are not allowed to leave the building unaccompanied. We ask that you enter the building from the Washington Street entrance and proceed to the Main Office.
Scheduling and Class Placement
School leaders have been working hard on scheduling, and ensuring that all placement requests are considered. In a school of 1300+ students, this is no small task. Mr. Mark DiStefano, Ryan Holland, and myself have worked closely to schedule students in the most thoughtful way possible.
Placement letters will go home the week of August 22nd which is in line with what Chenery has done in the past. While students will know their team and homeroom, schedules will be visible the first day of school.
Class placements take a tremendous amount of time with careful considerations in regard to learning profiles as well as social emotional needs. School leaders look at the whole child, and specifically for fifth graders have met with elementary staff and school leadership to ensure a smooth transition.
COVID Health Updates
Please be on the lookout for an update from Beth Rumley and our nursing department, as well as Superintendent Phalen in regards to COVID health updates..
It is important to be mindful that this year we will be mask friendly and respectful of individual choices. All air filters have been changed, and we will continue to be mindful of mitigation strategies.
Within the first week of school we will be conducting our first fire drill. I will also be working closely with Chief McIsaac from the BPD on updating our safety measures and lock down procedures at Chenery.
Student Resource Officer
I am grateful to the Belmont Police Department for being able to welcome Officer Evan Nichols to Chenery as our SRO. His presence will be greatly appreciated. Officer Nichols will be present in hallways, stairwells, and lunches.

Food Service Update for 2022-2023 School Year
School lunch meals will be at no cost for all students through the 2022-2023 school year! Students will be charged $3.25 for a second meal. https://www.belmont.k12.ma.us/bps/Home/Food-Services
Although meals will be at no cost for all students, it is beneficial for families to complete the household Application for Free and Reduced Price Meals for the 2022-2023 school year. These forms will be available in September online at https://www.belmont.k12.ma.us/bps/Home/Food-Services/Free-Reduced-Price-Meals It is recommended that you submit an application if you believe your family would qualify based on income. It will also allow the school to establish eligibility for P-EBT benefits (if this program https://www.mass.gov/news/massachusetts-approved-to-provide-p-ebt-for-families-through-summer-2022 is extended for the 2022-2023 school year) and other school programs.

I have made myself available to Chenery staff to participate in “entry interviews.” While I have worked at Chenery for fourteen years, these conversations have been a great opportunity for me to listen and hear about the things teachers love about Chenery and the things we might want to work on improving. Once school begins in the fall I would like to extend that opportunity to parents so please be on the lookout for that in September.
