FROM THE PRESIDENTS
Hopefully everyone enjoyed the snow day on Friday and made it out to sled for the first time this season. Despite the difficulties presented by rising Covid cases, we have had a good start to the new year at Chenery. Everyone is staying flexible and trying to make things work.
We hope you are able to take some time this week to reflect on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., and what he did for this country. We have a long way to go, but it’s important to pause and reflect on where we have been. We are grateful for progress, openness, and the ability to learn about each other and respect each other as individuals.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out when you need us, or when you have ideas to share. You can reach us at firstname.lastname@example.org.

BELMONT WELLNESS COALITION PRESENTS IMPORTANT HEALTH DATA
As we continue to find increases in mental health concerns and challenges, we offer families the opportunity to better understand what is happening with the students at BPS. The Belmont Wellness Coalition will be presenting data highlights from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The YRBS is given to students in grades 7 - 12, every two years. Shared highlights include data on rates of substance use, causes of stress, and mental health factors, including information on suicide ideation. Time will be allowed for questions and discussion.
PTO CLUBS NEEDS 2022-2023 CO-CHAIRS
Chenery Afterschool Clubs are a PTO sponsored endeavor that offer our students great opportunities for learning and connection after hours at Chenery. As the current Clubs Co-Chairs Anna Churchill and Denise Steiner have graduating 8th graders this year, WE ARE IN NEED OF NEW CLUBS CO-CHAIRS FOR THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR in order to continue the PTO Clubs program in the fall. The Clubs Co-Chair position is a PTO Board position and will require some training this spring. Please click on this link to find out more. Further questions? Please contact Anna Churchill and Denise Steiner at CheneryPTOClubs@gmail.com.

BASEC PROGRAM IS IN NEED OF KN95 MASKS
Although Chenery’s school staff has been provided with KN95 masks, BASEC teachers are responsible for finding and purchasing their own masks. If you have any unused KN95 masks that you would like to donate to the BASEC program, please bring them to the front office at Chenery this week, in a bag labeled “KN95 Masks for BASEC teachers.” Thank you for helping keep our BASEC staff safe!
UPCOMING ZOOM COFFEE WITH PRINCIPAL KOZA
The next Zoom Coffee with Principal Koza will take place on Thursday, January 20 at 8am. This is usually a small, intimate group setting where parents can speak candidly and ask questions. If you haven’t attended one of these coffees, you are missing out!
Meeting ID: 886 3825 0496
TEACHER LOUNGE RENOVATION: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The teacher lounge at Chenery has seen better days, and the PTO would like to renovate the space. We need help from the parents! If you are in interior design, painting or construction (or just love decorating) and would like to donate your time (or updated furniture!), please contact us at email@example.com. We would love to have you be a part of this fun project! It means a lot to teachers to have a nice place to gather.
UPCOMING MLK BREAKFAST
Belmont’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Breakfast, historically intended to bring the Belmont and Boston communities together in a program of unity around Dr. King’s legacy, will once again take place via Zoom on Monday, January 17, 2022 at 9 am. This year’s keynote speaker will be Rahsaan Hall, Director of the Racial Justice Program at American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Massachusetts.
Many thanks to those who have contributed so far. Please remember that this is the only fundraising we do for the year. Will you help us meet our goal? No amount is too big or too small.
If you want to donate before the end of the tax year, you can donate here: https://my.cheddarup.com/c/chenery-pto-annualappeal-2021-2022
Your donation will benefit Chenery students, teachers, and staff and it directly impacts our community. Thank you for your support!
DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION NEWS
The DEI Committee now has a separate email, monitored by DEI Committee Co-Chairs, Caleb Collins and Natalie Leino. This is a fantastic way for parents to communicate ideas and concerns centered around diversity, equity and inclusion at Chenery, as well as to inform the PTO presidents and DEI committee about specific incidents. Please reach out! The newly-minted email address is cheneryptoDEI@gmail.com.
REQUEST FROM THE DISTRICT
Chenery needs substitutes and professional aides. It is critical our students get supported with caring adults. If you have an interest in working at Chenery as a sub, know that you will have flexibility on which days you work. If you are interested in being a professional aide, the role supports our students with special education plans, includes benefits and all school holidays off. Please contact Mike McAllister at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Chenery PTO has a Facebook page! (https://www.facebook.com/CheneryPTO) Please like or follow the page for the latest news and updates. This page is for sharing information and improving communication. If you have a question or need help, email us at email@example.com and we will do what we can to help or connect you to someone who can help you.
