Message from Principal Betancourt

Dear Butler Families,

My father with meAs you might be aware, there has been a disturbing and painful trend of increasing violence and hatred towards Asian American and Pacific Islanders in our country.  Not only because I myself identify as a member of this group, but more so because hatred, bias, and bigotry have no place in our community or world, I wanted to reach out to you.

My father came from the Philippines when he was 18 and I grew up with visits to my Lolo and Lola's, where she always wanted to make sure I had eaten enough.  While I did not learn to speak Tagalog, I did get to learn a lot about family and laughing together.  Here's a photo of me with my father when I was in first grade -->

My hope is to both support any of you who are feeling hurt and frightened right now, as well as to provide resources to those of you who wish to be allies in supporting and standing by our Asian American and Pacific Islander community members.  In this time when we should be lifting up and supporting one another, we need to make sure that we say out loud that this is not okay.

To all of our families who identify as Asian American and/or Pacific Islander, please know that you are in our hearts, you are valued, and you are not alone.

Our community is extraordinarily special because we are so wonderfully diverse.  Each and every child, each and every family, and each and every staff member is incredibly precious and beautiful, and helps to create this gorgeous mosaic that is the Butler School.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions or suggestions, or need any support.  I am here for you.

Warmly,

Danielle
