VOLUNTEER

SCHOOL ORGANIZATIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERING

Parent participation at Butler is encouraged and greatly appreciated.  Service opportunities for parents include serving on a PTA committee, assisting with a PTA event, volunteering at the school library or in your child’s classroom, or being a room parent.

Each class has one or two parents designated as Room Parents.  Room Parents assist classroom teachers with requests such as calling parents for field trips or other requests for parent participation.  Room Parents are also available to welcome and assist families new to the school. In the event of an emergency, for example if school is suddenly cancelled, Room Parents assist the principal in notifying parents.  They also assist the PTA with fund-raising projects, the collection of PTA dues, and special events. Those interested in serving as Room Parents should let the classroom teacher know within the first few days of school.

COUNCIL

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 requires each public school in the Commonwealth to establish a School Advisory Council, composed of parent, teacher and community representatives. The Council has responsibility for assisting the principal “in the identification of the educational needs of the students attending the school, in the review of the annual school budget, and in the formulation of a school improvement plan...”. (M.G.L. c.59B, s.59c, as amended).

The PTA, under the direction of the principal, administers the election of parent representatives, who generally serve two-year terms.  Parents interested in serving on the School Advisory Council, should speak with the principal or the PTA president.

The Butler Advisory Council meets once a month at the school.  The meetings are open to the public and are subject to the Massachusetts Open Meeting Law. Agendas and minutes of Council meetings are posted on the Bulletin Board located in the school office.  Notice of the meeting times are provided in the principal’s newsletter.

BELMONT SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Belmont Special Education Advisory Council welcomes parents with similar interests.  In addition, parents are involved in the review of curriculum and are often asked to serve on a curriculum steering committee.

PTA

THE PTA

The best way to become involved at Butler is to attend a PTA meeting to find out what activities are being planned.  Butler has created a Community Resource Bank for teachers, listing the skills and interests of parents and community members.  All parents will receive a form to fill out if they are interested in being included in the Resource Bank. SAC contact information is available here.

The Butler Parent Teachers Organization (“PTA”) provides the school with numerous programs which serve the school's pupils, parents, and staff.  During the school year, for example, the PTA sponsors a variety of educational and enrichment activities for our students, such as the Book Fair and the Butler Spring Fair.  Proceeds from these events are used to fund in-school enrichment events, field trips and other programs for the benefit of all our students.

The PTA also publishes a school directory listing the addresses and phone numbers of all Butler students.  The PTA Bulletin Board, located near the school office, is a good source of current information about PTA programs, meetings, and upcoming events. All parents are invited and encouraged to join the Butler PTA for a nominal annual fee.
