★ 3. Supporting Our Butler Staff Members

February Gifts for Our Butler Staff Members
Butler PTA was proud to fund a gift for our Butler staff members in February - a warm hat for this cold weather!

March Snack Drive for Butler Staff Members
Please support our Butler staff members by donating snacks that can be kept in the teachers’ lounge!  Being able to refuel during the day will help our staff members get through the long month of March.
All items should be individually wrapped, and the school cannot accept homemade treats due to allergy concerns.

Ideas: Cheeze-Its, Smartfood, popcorn, veggie straws, candy, chips, cookies, crackers, pretzels, granola bars, bags of apples, oranges, or clementines, and drinks like sparkling water, bottled water, and iced tea.
Ms. Quinn, Butler Social Worker, will be on the Butler basketball court, wearing a Red Sox facemask and with a “snack donation drop-off” sign to collect donations on the following days/times:
Wednesday, 2/24 – Morning drop off (8:25-8:40)
Wednesday, 2/24 – Morning Dismissal (11:45)
Friday, 2/26 – Morning drop off (8:25-8:40)
Monday, 3/1 – Morning drop off (8:25-8:40)
Monday, 3/1 – Morning dismissal (11:45 and 2:45 p.m.)

*If none of these times work for you, email Ms. Quinn at mquinn@belmont.k12.ma.us to arrange another day/time.

★ 4. In-School Enrichment

First Grade: Meteorologist Visit
In late January and early February, WBZ-TV meteorologist, Jacob Wycoff, joined each of the first-grade classes to share his knowledge about weather and his work in television.  This was part of the “Air and Weather” curriculum unit.  It was a much anticipated and exciting virtual visit for the children!

Jacob shared the inner workings of broadcasting on television and how weather is forecast using tools including supercomputers.  He explained that weather can be serious as is the case with tornadoes.  Jacob was very kind to answer many questions from the children.  Jacob shared that he is “super proud” of the students.  He knows that it has been a tough year for them.  We are grateful that Jacob made the time for our first graders.

3rd Grade Virtual Field Trips: Wampanoag-Peoples of the Dawn Land
On February 8 and 10, Butler 3rd graders were excited to travel virtually to more about the Wampanoag way of life. An educator from the Plimoth Patuxet Museum joined each cohort on two different days to share about the daily life of the Wampanoag in the 17th century, as well as their current lives and communities. Students gained an understanding of the connection the Wampanoag and other Native people have to Mother Earth, their seasonal way of life and their respect for all living beings. Their Native American Museum Teacher wore modern clothing and spoke from a modern perspective so that they could discuss the story of their people in both past and present times. They shared artifacts of traditional life, such as wooden bowls and spoons, animal furs, and tools. The PTA contributed $600 to support the 3rd graders’ unit on North American Indigenous peoples.

★ 5. Families of Fourth Graders: Moving On Committee Announcements

Slideshow: We are asking each 4th grade family to sort through photos of your child, at Butler, throughout the years for the Moving On slideshow. Pictures of the kids on field trips, the playground, Color Day, in the classroom, with classmates at birthday parties + playdates all work well. If you are new to Butler, feel free to send pictures of your child at a different school. We want ALL the students to be represented and can only achieve that with YOUR pictures. We are requesting you provide at least 2 (school-based) photos, in the highest resolution possible, to our private email.

Please include names of student(s) and what grade the photo is from. SEND TO: Butlermovingon2021@gmail.com by February 27, 2021.

Yearbook: You have been sent a Photo Request from Picaboo Yearbooks for a solo picture of your child. The instructions are in the email on how to create and send. This photo is SEPARATE of the slideshow picture request. This picture is for the Yearbook. If you have any questions or need me to resend the request, please reach out to me at sclafani555@gmail.com. Thank you! Happy picture taking!

Questions or interested in joining the Moving On Team? Email Butlermovingon2021@gmail.com.

★ 6. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

The Butler PTA is committed to helping create and foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for our community. We would like to create a committee that would bring together Butler parents (and potentially other Butler community members) who are interested in finding creative and meaningful ways to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the school and broader community. If you are interested, please send us an email with the subject line “DEI Committee” to butlerpta@gmail.com.
