Ice Skating Night - Saturday, January 23, 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Viglirolo Skating Rink; 221 Concord Ave

Join us for our Annual Butler Ice Skating Night! It'll look a little different this year (because what doesn't!?) but we're still looking forward to a great time! Bring your skates, dress warm, and have fun!

Event Guidelines:

  • You must preregister for the event: https://forms.gle/MxvScSMSt4AX7FCb6
  • We have space for 25 skaters and 23 spectators; please restrict one spectator per family if at all possible; spectator spots are marked in the stands
  • You must arrive dressed and ready to go (minus skates). When you are done skating, you must exit the facility promptly and not gather.
  • You must complete a COVID-19 prescreen form. We will email this to the address you include in the form (linked above). Bring this with you to the event. We will have hard copies at the rink if you forget to bring this with you.
  • You must wear a mask at all times while in the facility
  • If we have more than 25 skaters register, we will have a lottery to select the 25 skaters who can join this event. Given the limited space, we thought this would be more equitable than a "first come, first served" approach. If this is very successful, we will try to hold another one!
  • Register for this event by Wednesday, January 20. We will notify you on Thursday, January 21 if you have a slot at the rink for Butler Family Skate Night
  • Need skates? Champions in Town Center has new and used skates for sale!

Family Literacy Week 2021 - February 1 - 5 (Family fun for a whole week, not just one night!)
We are putting together a short video of our Butler community reading. Please submit a photo of your child reading to scottmasterson1@gmail.com by February 3. Capture a favorite reading spot, favorite reading audience (siblings, stuffed animals), favorite book, or favorite reading outfit...whatever is fun!

Schedule of events:
Tuesday, 2/2 at 7 p.m. via Zoom
Hot cocoa and pajama reading with Principal Betancourt

Thursday, 2/4 at 7 p.m. via Zoom
Local author and illustrator Hanna Cha will read her book, Tiny Feet Between the Mountains and share some fun activities with our Butler community. This event would not have been possible without Belmont Books, please order your copy locally!

Friday, 2/5 - Food Truck Friday
End the week viewing our reading video and eating great food!

In addition to reading BINGO for the week, we are excited to announce that each day we will send out a video of a Belmont High School student reading their favorite children’s book! Contact Kim Masterson with any questions: kluna14@yahoo.com.

Food Truck Fundraiser - Friday, February 5, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Neighborhood StrEATs is bringing two food trucks to our school again!

15% of all sales will go directly to the PTA for Butler Elementary School! Starting on 1/31 at 4 p.m., you can pre-order here: https://www.bestfoodtrucks.com/butler. Walk-up orders will likely not be taken.

Please note: Pre-ordering allows the truck to gauge interest level and if orders will cover their expenses. Trucks might need to cancel if we don’t have enough pre-orders. So, save some time and guarantee yourself a delicious dinner.

Valentine’s Day - Support Jayne’s Flowers in Belmont
Valentine's Day is right around the corner! If your plans include flowers for a special someone, your order from Jayne's Flowers in Belmont can support a local business and the Butler PTA at the same time! Delivery and curbside pickup are both available--more details coming soon!

Virtual Art Night - Friday, February 26
Save the date for virtual art night. Details coming soon!

★ In-School Enrichment

Third Graders Take First Virtual Field Trips to the Concord Museum
On December 10 and 11, each of our third-grade classes “went on” (read Zoomed) a virtual field trip to the Concord Museum to supplement the curriculum unit on the history of Native peoples in Massachusetts. On each of the trips, Butler third graders learned about the geography of New England, and where and how, the Native Peoples lived in New England before Europeans arrived. In addition, they came to understand the important work of archaeologists as well as examined pictures of early tools used by indigenous peoples of North America. In the end, even though the bus ride to our field trip was only the click of a mouse, the excitement around a new learning experience was palpable. When asked if they’d like to do it again, the class joyfully responded with a resounding “YES!”. The PTA contributed $300 to bring these three virtual field trips to the third-grade classrooms.

Fourth Grade Virtual Author Visit
On January 14 and 16, Kyandreia Jones, author of two Choose Your Own Adventure books, led virtual writers’ workshops with fourth-grade classes at Butler. The PTA, in partnership with Belmont Books, coordinated this visit. Learn more about Kyandreia Jones and her books.

★ 2020-2021 School Directory

The directory includes every Butler student, who as of October 2020, submitted their contact information to Belmont Public Schools and agreed to have their name and information listed.

Families of students who are working in the fully remote setting: If you did not receive your directory, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or email butlerpta@gmail.com

★ Gifts for Butler Staff Members

The Butler Mental Health Team approached Butler PTA with a proposal to support Butler staff members’ mental health and self-care needs.  PTA was happy to support this effort and was able to fund mugs, hot chocolate, and cookies for staff members before the winter break in December.

★ Families of Fourth Graders: Moving On Announcement

Slideshow: We are asking each 4th-grade family to sort through photos of your child, at Butler, throughout the years for the Moving On slideshow. Pictures of the kids on field trips, the playground, Color Day, in the classroom, with classmates at birthday parties + playdates all work well.  If you are new to Butler, feel free to send pictures of your child at a different school. We want ALL the students to be represented and can only achieve that with YOUR pictures. We are requesting you provide at least 2 (school-based) photos, in the highest resolution possible, to our private email.

Please include the names of student(s) and what grade the photo is from. Send to Butlermovingon2021@gmail.com by February 27.

Yearbook: The Moving On Committee is currently organizing the 2020/2021 Yearbook. Because we have not yet been able to take school pictures this year, the Moving On Coordinators have planned a way to organize getting photos submitted for the yearbook and they need your contact details.

Please "Opt-in" if you would like to share your contact information with the yearbook coordinator Sam Sclafani by filling out this form. This information will be used by coordinators to contact you for a photo request, which will include directions on how to submit, as well as other Moving On communications.

Questions or interested in joining the Moving On Team? Email Butlermovingon2021@gmail.com.

★ FBE Virtual Spelling Bee & Trivia 2021

The upcoming FBE Spelling Bee & Trivia event promises to be an afternoon and evening of fun from the comfort of your own home on Saturday, February 6. The Bee & Trivia format will utilize both Zoom and Kahoot! and will be divided into two fun-filled segments: a Family Bee (Swarms from 3:00 - 5:00 pm) and a Teen & Adult Bee (swarms from 7:00 - 9:00 pm). While there will still be spelling, both Bees will now include trivia questions too, with surprise hosts, half-time entertainment, and both segments will be eligible for an assortment of fun prizes!

Registration is open from January 19-29. One member of your team should register the entire team - you will need all the names of the team members and your team name upon registration. The fee per team is $40. Scholarships are available, please contact The Bee Keeper at beekeeper@fbe-belmont.org for information.

For additional information about the FBE Virtual Spelling Bee & Trivia and the FBE, please visit www.fbe-belmont.org. Thank you for your continued support of the Foundation for Belmont Education. Together, we are making a difference in the Belmont Public Schools. Email beekeeper@fbe-belmont.org with questions.

★ Featured Open Positions

Joining the PTA is a great way to get to know other parents, learn more about what goes on at school, and enrich our children’s experiences at school. This month, we are featuring these two open positions and hope that you’ll consider volunteering your time.

Communications Coordinator
Do you have a way with words?  Do you use social media?  Do you like to be in the know and like to inform others about what’s going on?  We are looking for a Communications Coordinator who will work with event coordinators and board members to communicate information using the Butler PTA website, social media, newsletters, and the bulletin board.  The Communications Coordinator will also be part of a team that is working on communicating efficiently and effectively across the Belmont School District.

Vice President of Fundraising
Do you like to talk to people, interact with local businesses, and motivate others to get involved?  We do so much more than fundraising, but let’s face it, without fundraising, we wouldn’t be able to do much.  We are looking for an upbeat, organized, and detail-oriented parent to coordinate our fundraising efforts.  Our two major fundraising events (the membership drive and the Fun Run) are over for this year, but our Vice President of Fundraising will work with our PTA board, Fun Run team, and local business coordinators to oversee a comprehensive fundraising plan for the rest of this year and beyond.

Please contact butlerpta@gmail.com if you have questions or other ideas for how you want to get involved. Learn more about our other open positions.
