Burbank Family News- June 10, 2022

Dear Burbank Families,

What an amazing day we are having at Burbank School- it is Field Day!  Our students (and staff and parent/guardian volunteers) are smiling and laughing as they engage with a variety of events including an obstacle course, relay races, water balloon toss, and much more!  A huge shoutout to Mrs. Crow and all of the volunteers who have worked so hard to bring this tradition back to Burbank! Below are a few pictures from the morning.

The following information is in this week’s update:

  • Three Good Things: Good News Network, Self Regulation Materials and Whole School Read

  • Important Dates

Three Good Things

1.  Good News Network: Our grade 4 student leaders created a two minute video for all students to view that provides their advice on "How to be successful at Burbank School".  This video stars Yeralisse, Micah, Leo, Miles, Mabel, Lauren, Karolina and Finnely.

2. Self-Regulation Materials: We were able to purchase almost $350 of additional materials to support students with self-regulation.  These items will be saved to be used to "kick off" the 2022-2023 school year.  This is one way that our team is being proactive, supportive and prepared.

3. Picture Book to Start the Year!: The PTA had a small amount of money at Belmont Books that they offered to use to support our efforts to be inclusive, anti-racist and connected!  We researched books and themes (great blog here), and landed on the following:

The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson

The beginning of a new school year, with a new teacher and a new group of classmates, can bring out a lot of apprehension about fitting in. The Day You Begin highlights the idea that everyone feels different for one reason or another at times and can find themselves feeling hesitant to step outside of their comfort zone in order to connect with others. This book focuses on the shared feeling of being an outsider and encourages readers to be courageous and take the first step toward creating their own sense of belonging.

A copy of this book will be purchased for every homeroom to begin the year. It will help us welcome students and colleagues to our school and lends itself to the idea that "We Belong at Burbank." It will be very exciting to see where this book takes us!
