Dear Burbank Elementary School Parents/Guardians,
In my original communication to you on 11/4/2021, I outlined the hiring process we would follow in order to fill the Interim Burbank Principal position. Despite the fact that it was not a traditional process, as interim searches often are not, I promised you at that time that we would “do our best to ensure that we hire the qualified and capable Principal that your children deserve.” I believe we have made good on that promise. I am pleased to announce the hiring of Ms. Brenda Maurao, the Interim Principal of the Mary Lee Burbank Elementary School, effective January 3, 2022.
Mrs. Maurao grew up in Massachusetts and spent her high school years in Connecticut, going on to attend Western Connecticut State University where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Human Relations in 1996. After college she attended the University of Bridgeport where she received her Master’s Degree in 1998 in the field of Elementary Education. She holds a Principal’s Certification from Lesley University. Brenda is the current Assistant Director of Talent Growth and Development for the Framingham, MA Public Schools. Prior to that she served as the Assistant Director of Elementary Education and as an Elementary Principal in Framingham for three years. Additional school leadership work includes as Principal at the K-3 Stall Brook Elementary School in Bellingham, MA and as an Assistant Principal from 2012-2017 at the Fred W. Miller School in Holliston, MA. She was an elementary classroom teacher for 13 years from 1999-2012. If her name sounds familiar to you it is because she taught at the Burbank School as Grade 3 classroom teacher from 2000-2005, in addition to Grade 3 classroom leadership experiences in Holliston, MA and Arlington, MA.
During our process Brenda impressed us, proving herself to be the thoughtful, hard-working, and kind professional your children deserve. She was selected from a pool of highly-qualified applicants, totaling more than 19 applicants, 7 first round interviewees, and two finalists. She was the preference of Burbank parents/guardians, Burbank staff, and my leadership team. I am thankful that so many community stakeholders participated in the interview process including submitting questions, attending interviews, and completing feedback forms. She will remain in this interim position until the end of next school year: June 30, 2023. Our search for a permanent Burbank Principal will commence next year. Offering an extended 1.5 year interim period was a critical part of attracting a candidate as highly qualified as Brenda to leave her current position in the middle of this year. It is an offer that provides the Burbank community with consistency during this important time.
I feel that we are fortunate to have a leader like Brenda lead your child’s school for the second half of the year. She will provide not only the stability that is sought, but the ability to also make forward progress on this year’s goals. In the coming days we will be releasing information about “Meet and Greet” opportunities where you can meet her. Please be on the lookout for that information. I know that you join me in welcoming Ms. Maurao to Burbank.
Lastly, I am indebted to Assistant Superintendent Janice Darias for her help since 10/21/2021 serving the Burbank School as the on-site building leader. Her calming presence and capable way has been helpful in getting the school through these challenging few weeks.
