Interim Principal Forum for Burbank Parents/Guardians: Monday, 11/22/2021 @ 5:00-6:45pm

Dear Burbank Parents/Guardians,

When I last communicated with you via letter on 11/4/2021, I expressed my desire to hire “the qualified and capable Principal that your children deserve.”  I reiterated that intent when I met with Burbank educators on 11/9/2021 @ 3:15pm.  I write to update you on our progress on that important mission.

Last week we conducted seven (7) interviews for the Interim Principal position at the Burbank Elementary School.  These candidates were selected from an overall pool that included 19 total applicants.  The interview pool was assembled from a variety of sources – candidates who applied directly to our Frontline/Applitrack database, candidates who applied to similar vacant positions in the district, as well as candidates who came recommended from personal and professional networks.  We are confident that the pool is competitive and that our process has been thorough.

I am happy to announce that from last week’s interviews, we have identified two finalist candidates:

  • John Bruno: John is a current Supervisor of Special Education in the Stoneham, MA Public Schools.  Prior to that work he served as an Evaluation Team Supervisor in Lexington, MA from 2014-2019, as a Special Education Supervisor in Melrose, MA from 2013-2014.  His teaching service includes work as a Special Education teacher for 4 years at the middle school level in Melrose.  We are thrilled to have a professional of his caliber in the mix.
  • Brenda Maurao: Brenda is the current Assistant Director of Talent Growth and Development for the Framingham, MA Public Schools.  Prior to that she served as the Assistant Director of Elementary Education and as an Elementary Principal in Framingham for three years.  Additional school leadership work includes as Principal at the K-3 Stall Brook Elementary School in Bellingham, MA and as an Assistant Principal from 2012-2017 at the Fred W. Miller School in Holliston, MA.  Prior to that she was an elementary classroom teacher in Holliston (Grade 3), in Belmont (Grade 3), and in Arlington (Grade 3), a teaching career that spanned 13 years from 1999-2012.  Similarly, we feel fortunate to be able to have a leader like her as one of our finalists.

The next step in our process is to hold a public forum for parent/guardians.  It will be held on Monday, 11/22/2021 @ 5:00 – 6:45pm via Google Meet.  You will have a chance to meet both candidates as they respond to questions posed by a moderator.  We strongly encourage all Burbank parents/guardians to try to attend, if they are available.  Following that forum, there will be an opportunity to provide your input.

Burbank Google Meet login information for parent/guardian forum: Monday, 11/22/2021 @ 5:00 – 5:45pm (Finalist #1), then 6:00-6:45pm (Finalist #2)

If you would like to submit a question to be asked by the moderator, please go to: https://forms.gle/NV6MYxSdHQwuXtqE7.  The deadline for questions to be submitted is Monday, 11/22/2021 @ 3:00pm.

I hope that we can count on your participation.  You represent an important source of feedback that I will use to inform my final hiring decision.

John P. Phelan, Superintendent
