School Councils, Organizations and Committees

Parent participation at BMS is encouraged and greatly appreciated. Below you will find a listing of Leadership Boards and their role in the BMS Community. If you are looking to get involved, whether it be in a lead position or an individual contributor role, we welcome you. For more information on an individual contributor type role, please look at the PTO section of the website for more information and contacts.

School Advisory Council

A school council is a representative, building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members and, at the secondary level, students, required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.

Councils are to assist principals by reviewing the school building budget and developing the school improvement plan.

Belmont Middle School has an active Parent Teacher Organization that meets periodically during the school year. Parents/Guardians are urged to join the organization and give it support and assistance. Notices concerning their meetings and activities will be sent home via a bi-weekly PTO newsletter and alternating announcements in our bi-weekly Parent/Guardian Newsletter.

Belmont Special Education Parent Advisory Council (Belmont SEPAC)

The Belmont Special Education Advisory Council welcomes parents with similar interests. In addition, parents are involved in the review of curriculum and are often asked to serve on a curriculum steering committee. The PTO also has a BSPEAC Liaison working with the Belmont BSPEAC group to get information and resources to the BMS Community.

The METCO (Metropolitan Council for Education Opportunities) program, a voluntary integration program founded in 1966, provides a suburban public school education for African-American, Hispanic, and Asian students from Boston. Belmont typically hosts 125 students as part of the METCO program. This program fosters a broader educational and social experience for both suburban and urban children and their families. METCO students participate in all aspects of the academic and extracurricular life of the school and are supported by the METCO Director and staff.

For more information about the program please contact METCO Director at 617-993-5850 or visit the Massachusetts Department of Education METCO page. The PTO also has a METCO Liaison working with the Belmont METCO group to create host families and special events.

The Belmont School Committee

The School Committee is the policy setting entity for all schools in the Belmont district. It also appoints the superintendent, approves the budgets, and negotiates with school unions.
