From the Principal's Desk - Week of Monday, October 23

Dear Belmont Families,

A month into school, we recognize that while so much has changed at BHS for this school year, so much of what is good and important in our school community has not - namely, the commitment, dedication, and awe-inspiring ways of your students. The School Committee has decided to put a pause on our hybrid start. We are using this pause in the move to hybrid as an opportunity to reflect upon our remote practices and to solicit more feedback from students about their experience so far this school year. Given the high level of student stress surrounding the uncertainty, we are hopeful that our students can rest, recharge, and get outside this weekend.

In this issue, you will find updates on:

  1. Remote/Hybrid Timeline
  2. SAT update
  3. X-Block
  4. Cameras

Following the decision to keep BHS in a remote setting and therefore postpone the hybrid start, the School Committee will meet again on Tuesday. We will provide information following their determinations in this meeting.  Please note: Phase 1 and Phase 2 students will continue to access their classes from home through the end of the school day on Tuesday, 10/27. We will plan to communicate any and all changes to our phase 2 programming as that information becomes available.

SATs on Tuesday 10/27

We plan to go ahead with our SAT tests on Tuesday for seniors who have signed up. We will be using the latest information from BALA to identify rooms with sufficient air flow.. If you are signed up for this test, you will receive more information on Monday.

Starting Monday, students will sign up for X-Block sessions with their homeroom teachers. X-Block occurs on Tuesday and again on Friday. Each X-Block is split in half resulting in two sessions: X1 and X2. Students are required to select X1 or X2 on both Tuesday AND Friday. Attendance will be taken based on the sign-ups. X-Block will function as a class. A common question from students has been, “What if I don’t need to see a teacher?”  Even if students feel that there is not a pressing need to meet, we are requiring students to schedule sessions with a teacher or guidance counselor as we believe that there is a value to these opportunities by way of relationship building and additional practice.  Students can expect an email from Enriching Students on Monday morning, which will enable them to log in to their accounts. Going forward students will log in to this account to access their schedule for X block once they have signed up during their homerooms.

Beginning Monday November 2, we are going to be taking a slightly different approach to our ‘cameras on’ policy at BHS. Many parents and teachers have expressed concern over the number of students who are not using their cameras, and the impact that this is having on class culture while we are in remote. We invite students to self-advocate (by emailing their teachers) if there are reasons why they would prefer to keep their cameras off. We also recognize that 80 minutes is a long time to be on camera and we have asked teachers to identify natural places in the class session for students to take a camera break. We will continue to seek feedback on this policy and revise as necessary. We hope that the change we are making starting November 2 will benefit students by encouraging participation and engagement and solidifying class communities.
