Fall 2020 Athletic Department Update

Volume #2 September 15, 2020

Based on the recent guidelines established by the EEA, DESE, MIAA, Middlesex League, and Belmont  Public Schools, and voted on by the School Committee, the following has been established for the Fall of 2020:

  •  Boys & Girls Soccer, Field Hockey, Golf, and Cross Country will take place in the 2020 Fall Season.  Tryouts/practices will begin the week of Monday, September 21st.
  • The Fall 2020 online athletic registration process has been ongoing all summer in anticipation of Fall Sports taking place. They will close Wednesday, September 16th. All student-athletes interested in trying out for a fall sport must be registered by 9/16. Due to strict health and safety guidelines, NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 9/16. Please visit the BHS website to access the Sign up form for Fall Athletics 
  • The standard BPS High School Athletic User Fee  for a student’s first sport played of $450.00 along with all other required forms must be submitted no later than Wednesday, September 16th. *Please note that the Belmont School Committee will be discussing the current  BHS Athletic User Fees and considering possible modification at their next meeting slated for Tuesday September, 15th.

For ALL players

  • Masks are required to be worn at all times
  • Hand sanitizer and/or sanitizing wipes – Athletes are encouraged to provide their own hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) and/or sanitizing wipes and use them frequently – including prior to and at the conclusion of a practice or game.
  • Candidates are required to being  their own water to tryouts & practices
  • Soccer candidates are required to bring their own SOCCER BALL
  • Daily, Mandatory Pre Participation COVID-19 screening will be conducted  by your coach prior to any practice or game
  • All candidates must have on file in the BHS Athletic office for the current 2020-2021 school year a parent permission form, MIAA 
  • Chemical Health form, BHS concussion education form and concussion history form.
  • All candidates must have on file in the BHS Nurses office proof of a current physical within the last 13 months in order to try out.
  • All candidates must have paid the BPS High School Athletic User Fee 

Tryout Schedule Monday Sept 21 thru Saturday Sept 26th

All try-out will take place on the BHS Campus at their designated location . Coaches  will be contacting candidates in advance of Monday, September 21st to let them know what (group / cohort) they will be in and what location / playing field to report to. Depending on the number of candidates (group / cohorts) may be assigned a specific day to report for tryouts.  Participation numbers and roster limits may result in cuts needing  to be made from all levels of each program.

Fall 2020 Athletic Department Update

Effective September 9, 2020

Based on the recent guidelines established by the EEA, DESE, MIAA, Middlesex League, and Belmont  Public Schools, and voted on by the School Committee, the following has been established for the Fall of 2020:

  • Boys & Girls Soccer, Field Hockey, Golf, and Cross Country will take place this Fall Season.  Tryouts/practices will begin the week of Monday, September 21st.  More detailed tryout and practice schedules will be distributed the Week of 9/14.

  • Football, Football Cheering, Girls Volleyball, and Girls Swimming have been moved to the MIAA Fall 2 Season, with tentative season dates of 2/22/21-4/25/21. 

  • MASKS ARE REQUIRED AS SPECIFIED BY MIAA SPORT SPECIFIC RULE MODIFICATIONS for all participants and coaches at practices and games. In accordance with Belmont Public School health and safety policies, GAITERS ARE NOT PERMITTED for athletic participation.

  • The Middlesex League Varsity Teams will participate in a 10 game interscholastic schedule this fall, with the exception of Cross-Country (5 Meets).  All Sub-Varsity teams with the expectation of Cross-Country will participate in an 8 game interscholastic schedule this fall. 

  • All sub-varsity games and most varsity games will be played on Saturdays in October and November (10/3 to 11/21). Additional varsity games will be played on Columbus Day (10/12) and Veteran’s Day (11/11).  Middlesex League Golf matches will be played during the week based on golf course availability.

  • Belmont will compete against one school in all sports on the same weekend to limit contact and exposure and to also help with contract tracing should it be needed at any point during the season.  

  • Varsity Teams will practice 3 times per week (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) and Sub-Varsity Teams will practice 2 times per week (Tuesday/Thursday) throughout the fall season.  Practice times are still being determined, but student-athletes should plan for an hour and half time block on their respective practice days.

  • Attendance at all practices and games will be strictly monitored. Every participating student-athlete will be required to answer pre participation questions relative to COVID screening with their coach before the start of every practice and game during the 2020 Fall Season.

  • In an effort to remain in compliance with all Massachusetts State Laws relative to large person gatherings, the Middlesex league will only permit one fan per student-athlete at each HOME and AWAY athletic contest.   Attendance protocols will be strictly enforced in all locations.  Masks and social distancing will be expected for all spectators in attendance.

Belmont High School will offer the following teams for the Fall 2020 season (actual registrations and interest will determine the final team offerings).

Per The approved Middlesex League agreement & to ensure health and safety, Belmont’s roster sizes will not exceed the numbers indicated in parentheses.
