John P. Phelan, Superintendent of Schools

In every entry you will find news from the schools as well as entries that will be staples in each edition, such as Teaching and Learning, School Committee Updates, and Good News.  We hope to highlight our staff, students, and this amazing community we are all part of.  There is a tremendous amount of activity in every school in Belmont, and we are proud to share it through this newsletter and the BPS website.

First Day of School Year 2015-2016

First Day of School Year 2015-2016

date 8/31/2015

Wednesday, September 2, 2015 will be the first day of school for all students in grade one through grade 12.  Our kindergarten students will start next week on Tuesday and Wednesday.

My hope is that the pre Labor Day start will facilitate a smooth transition for our children by having two days of school this week, followed by a long four day weekend, and four days of school next week. This gradual start will give our students a chance to meet their teachers this week, find out expectations for the year, and set up their school routines.  Then, hopefully they can spend the four day weekend stress free and return to school Tuesday refreshed and prepared to learn.

The seasons pass quickly in New England.  The spring comes through quietly to then feel long summer days upon us. As the days become a bit shorter and talk of fall is in the air, we have to admit that summer is coming to a close.  As T.S. Eliot wrote: “… And to make an end is to make a beginning.”

The beginning of a new school year is upon us and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our students to their schools. Whether you are a five year old getting ready for kindergarten, or an 8th grader preparing for the last year of middle school or the 12th grader preparing for the Senior Thesis at Belmont High, the start of the year has great energy and promise.  Please review the updates for the 2015/16 school year.

The administrative and year round staff has been working hard throughout the summer to prepare for the start of another school year.  My thanks go out to our administrative assistants, custodians, teachers, and administrators who have worked to ensure a smooth start of the school year for all.

As of this writing, we are in the final stretches of the school year. Although we are all here busy and planning for next year, one can't help but reflect on the year that has passed.  Bumps along the road were smoothed out with help from the Belmont community along with an extraordinary amount of work and giving to keep Belmont a top-notch school.

April 14 Newsletter

date 4/14/2015

Over the last month the community engaged in a powerful conversation about the town budget and services.  In a day of very high election turnout, the community voted to adopt a $4.5 million override.  As the superintendent responsible for leading our schools, I am appreciative of the efforts of every voice in this conversation and value the decision to provide financial support to the town and especially our schools.  This vote of confidence in the schools will bring a heavier burden upon our leadership team to ensure we are spending tax dollars efficiently and effectively on behalf of the community.  We look forward to continue to provide a high quality of education to Belmont students.

There is one newsletter this month due to the April recess. I hope you and your families have a wonderful week off.
