BPS Health and Safety Bulletin Dec 2021

Belmont Public Schools

December 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians,

During this season of giving and thankfulness, your BPS nurses want to extend our deepest gratitude for your continued partnership during this time. It has been a challenging two years filled with uncertainty and constant change, and we are grateful to all students and families for your vigilance and patience as we continue to navigate all that the pandemic bings. Supporting the safety of our students, teachers, staff, and community continues to be our most important mutual priority.

We are excited to introduce our high school nurses

Illness and Daily Symptom Checking

With cold and flu season upon us and continuing COVID cases among vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, daily symptom checking remains one of our most important mitigation strategies.

Be sure to review the SYMPTOM CHECKER  before sending your student to school each day. Students and staff with symptoms are required to stay home and PCR test, regardless of vaccination status.

If you answer “YES” to any of the questions, please complete the Absence Follow-up form for your school with the link found at the bottom of the symptom checker page.

Please note the changes to the symptom checker this year. “YES” means:

  • ANY 1 symptom in part one OR

  • ANY 2 symptoms in part 2  OR

  • ANY RISK factor in part 3.

If you answer ‘NO’ to all questions, your student can report to school as planned.

If your student needs to be tested for COVID-19, please know that we require all tests to be PCR tests. Please send a copy of the results to your school nurse for clearance for your student to return to school. For more information, please visit the Nursing Health and Safety Symptom Check Page

Important Mask Reminders

Please remember that well-fitting Masks covering both the nose and mouth continue to be required to be worn by ALL students, staff, visitors, and vendors while in all school buildings.

We are finding many students arriving at school in the morning without masks. All students are expected to board the buses and enter the buildings wearing a mask. The district has a limited supply of disposable masks in the event that a student’s mask becomes soiled, broken, is forgotten at home, or a backup mask is not provided.  Your help in ensuring that your child leaves the house with a properly fitting mask and has extra masks packed each day is appreciated.

Masks must be made of more than one layer, cover, and be worn over both the nose and mouth. No gaiters, bandanas, or masks with valves are allowed per our mask policy

Vaccinations and boosters are encouraged

Holiday Travel

We expect to see an increase in illness and positive cases after the winter break due to travel and gatherings. Although BPS does not currently require testing following travel, we strongly urge all families to follow CDC travel guidelines, continue to be vigilant, and follow the symptom checker.

An update on our testing program will be sent next week. Please note that there will be no testing next week, testing will resume the week of January 3.

We are still looking for a testing coordinator. If you are interested in this 5 days per week 3 hours per day position, please reach out to mrumley@belmont.k12.ma.us

Thank you for your continued efforts on behalf of our students to provide a safe environment for everyone in our schools. Please reach out to your school nurse if you have any questions. We wish you all peace, health, and hope in the new year.
