Information on Influenza Vaccine Requirement

Information on Influenza Vaccine Requirement

Dear Belmont Public School Families,

On August 19th, 2020, the state public health officials announced that influenza immunizations will be required annually for all children 6 months or older who are attending Massachusetts child care, pre-school, K-12, colleges and universities. The new vaccine requirement is an important step to reduce flu-related illness and overall impact of respiratory illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students must receive a seasonal influenza vaccine by December 31, 2020 for the 2020-2021 school year and influenza season. As with all required immunizations, students must be in compliance for continued enrollment in school, regardless of whether the district is providing instruction in-person, or using a hybrid or remote learning model.

  • Important step for parents/Guardians: After your child receives a flu vaccine, please send a copy of the immunization record to your child’s school nurse. Click here for nurse contacts.

New students enrolling beginning January 2021:

Students enrolling between January 1 and March 31 must have received a dose of vaccine for the current flu season before entry (along with all other required vaccinations). Students enrolling after March 31 are not required to have a dose of influenza vaccine for enrollment for the current school year but will be required to receive a dose for the following school year.

Please note that on rare occasions, people may have mild symptoms for up to a few days post vaccination. It is advised that your child receive the vaccine at your earliest convenience.

However, if your child feels ill after receiving the vaccine, please do not send your child to school as this could mimic COVID-19 symptoms, which would warrant dismissal from school and you would have to get your child tested for COVID per guidelines.

Please see the Massachusetts DPH announcement for more information.

Be Well!
