Belmont Woman’s Club to present new Belmont Assemblies at the Homer House

Social dance classes for fifth and sixth grade boys and girls

The Belmont Woman’s Club announces that it will present a new series of social dance classes for fifth and sixth grade boys and girls beginning in the fall.  The historic 1853 Homer House on Pleasant Street will be the venue for the Belmont Assemblies, a series of eight one-hour classes that will run after school on Thursdays from late September to early November.

“We are delighted to begin the Belmont Assemblies this coming fall,” said Belmont Woman’s Club Co-President Kelly Higgins, who noted that social dance classes were a staple of Belmont youth experience at least through the late 1960s.  “The instructor is a longtime high school fine and performing arts educator by profession.  He has taught these highly popular youth ballroom dance and etiquette classes in Acton, Weston, Hingham and other greater Boston communities for the past 15 years.”

The dance classes will take place in the spacious Homer House Library, which some Belmont children will remember from their second grade Strawberry Festival tours of the Homer mansion.  In addition to instruction in traditional and contemporary dances and related social etiquette, every class will include party dances and games, making the Assemblies a fun, non-intimidating way for children to practice social skills and gain confidence, according to Hughes.
Registration for rising fifth and sixth grade students in the coming school year is now open.  Space is limited, so parents are advised to register early.  There will be two class-time options, 4:00-5:00 p.m. and 5:15-6:15 p.m.  Tuition is $125 for the eight-class series.
