The story behind the FBE Apple Run - told from the creators of this cherished event

The FBE Apple Run was born from a tragedy in January 2013, when Dan Scharfman, a beloved member of the community and a sitting member of the Belmont School Committee passed away suddenly. An avid long-distance runner, and tireless advocate for the Belmont Public Schools, Dan’s untimely death set in motion a plan to remember him and celebrate his spirit of giving back to our community.

The original idea for a race came from three different perspectives - FBE fundraising (Jamie Shea), a passion for running and a general interest in organizing a road race (Charlie Conroy) and a desire for a memorial for a fellow Belmont runner and friend (Paul Roberts). By chance our paths crossed and the FBE Dan Scharfman Memorial Run was born!

It was a first event for many of us, so where to start? Thankfully the fundraising experts in the FBE got the ball rolling and Cityside Subaru of Belmont stepped up to be the run’s primary sponsor. They have anchored and grown the sponsorship since and are a great partner for the FBE. All we needed to do was figure how how to host a race! Who better to consult with than Casey Grant - who had hosted the Brendan Grant Memorial Baseball Tournament on Father’s Day for many years. At this time, it was the only Belmont Road-race (5K and 1 mile), and Casey was a wealth of knowledge and support and through his partnership we created a USATF certified 5K course. We were off and running… just had to organize the t-shirts, public safety, race registration, race day set up, T-shirt distribution, race day food, 100 volunteers, starting line, pre race activities, road closures and road marking, course signs, mile markers, race prizes, and of course porta-potties for our runners! And with that the Run-Book was born! This was our guide book that we created and helped us manage all the needed activities to host a race.

Through a lot of hard work, amazing teamwork across so many people we figured it all out. Now we just needed runners! And they came, the community really responded to the race and close to 600 people participated in our inaugural run - an amazing turnout and great show of respect for Dan and his family. The weather showed up too, with a cool and crisp fall morning - it couldn’t have been better.

In 2019, at the request of the Scharfman family, the Run was renamed to solely focus on education in Belmont. The race is now the FBE Apple Run (5K & 2K), and a Fall ritual for many families. It was an amazing experience to be part of an amazing team to create a community event for Belmont, and we can look back with great pride on the success of the race and the enormous difference it has made in helping our Belmont Public School students through generous grants from the FBE.
