FBE Virtual Spelling Bee & Trivia 2020 - Registration is Open!

Virtual FBE Spelling Bee & Trivia!

Announcing the 20th Annual Foundation for Belmont Education Spelling Bee!

The Bee will look a little different this year, but it will bee just as fun!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2020, 3:00 pm to 9:30 pm

FAMILY BEE: 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm  /  TEEN & ADULT BEE: 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

This year’s Spelling Bee is a spelling and trivia competition, and this year marks the 20th annual FBE Bee, but the first Virtual Bee for ALL AGES! The 2020 Virtual Bee will be divided into two segments: a Family Bee and a Teen & Adult Bee. Teams in both categories will be eligible for an assortment of prizes. While there will still be spelling, both Bees will now include trivia questions too! We will be using a combination of Kahoot!, which is an interactive game tool (either mobile app or website), and Zoom to enable teams to participate from wherever they are located.

The Family Bee

The Family Bee will be open to all ages. Each Family Team can comprise all the members of a household or friends from different households communicating through a separate chat. The majority of the questions will be geared toward the elementary and middle school level, so this is the ideal way for younger competitors to participate.

The Teen & Adult Bee

Team & Adult Bee teams can be made up of teens, parents, caregivers, or a combination! You can form teams either in your home or set up a separate chat between team members in different homes.

Team Names

The first challenge for both teams is to come up with a fun and creative team name, which could win you a prize for the most fun/creative Team Name! The Virtual Bee is intended to be a fun and inclusive event for all players, their families, and friends. In the spirit of the event, team names may not evoke violence, make others feel uncomfortable, or be in any way offensive. The Virtual Bee Chairs reserve the right to request that a team change its name.

My team hasn’t chosen a name, can I still register?

We strongly encourage you to choose your team name prior to registering - entry of your team name is a very useful part of the registration process. If you haven’t chosen one yet at the time of registration, or want to make a change to your team name, please email the Beekeeper at beekeeper@fbe-belmont.org.

Team Sizes

The optimal team size is 3-5 so all members have the ability to participate. Family teams could be larger depending on family size.

What technology do I need?

We will be using a combination of Kahoot! and a communications platform which is still to be confirmed. You can download the Kahoot! app ahead of the Bee or go to the Kahoot! website in your browser. If you’re curious about Kahoot!, and want to see it in action (at a different event) click here. While it is possible to participate using one device, you will probably find it easier to use two: a desktop or laptop for the social communication platform, where the host will read the questions and you’ll be able to view both questions and answer choices, and one for Kahoot!, where you’ll be able to submit your answers (this kind of acts like your game show buzzer!). Upon registration, you’ll receive an email with links to required technology, along with instructions for how to use them together.

What are the expected swarm times?

Family Bee: 1st Family swarm will be from 3pm - 3:45pm. If an additional swarm is needed, it will be from 4-4:45)

Teen & Adult Bee: 1st Teen and Adult swarm will be from 7-8pm. If an additional swarm is needed, it will be from 8:15 - 9:15pm)

Each team will be assigned to a specific swarm. Your swarm assignment and swarm arrival time will be posted on the FBE website a few days prior to the Bee, so that you can organize your team and plan accordingly. The first 5 minutes of your swarm will be instructions and practice. We encourage you to join before your swarm time so you’re ready to participate.

How to Register

One member of your team will register the entire team. The registration fee is $40/team. You will need all the names of the team members upon registration. Scholarships are available to help cover the registration fee. Please contact The Bee Keeper at beekeeper@fbe-belmont.org for information. Please register here

How to prepare for the FBE Virtual Bee

Before registration, form your team and come up with a fun name. After you register and in the weeks leading up to the Bee, be on the lookout for emails with clues that will help you with answers to questions. In addition plan your team outfit strategy and virtual background, so have fun and Bee creative! You could even win a prize!

About the FBE

The Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the Belmont Public Schools. While the Foundation cannot substitute for public support of education through tax dollars, the funds it raises from events such as the Spelling Bee, the FBE Apple Run, and the Spring Fundraiser play a pivotal role in fostering the creativity of our teachers, engaging the interest of our students, and sustaining the tradition of excellence that has characterized the Belmont Public Schools for so many years
