School Committee Presentations on Remote Schedules and Revised Phased Plan

Superintendent's Bulletin #10 - School Committee Presentations on Remote Schedules and Revised Phased Plan

Dear Belmont Community,

Please see the remote schedules presented at the August 25 School Committee meeting for elementary, middle, and high school students on the COVID-19 School Opening Fall 2020 page as well as the School Committee documents page. These remote models and schedules were presented by BHS Principal Isaac Taylor, Chenery Principal Karla Koza, and Butler Principal Danielle Betancourt for the elementary schools with principals in attendance at the meeting. These remote schedules give you an idea of an academic day for the student. We are fortunate to have been able to collaborate with our teachers regarding these schedules, and we thank all of our principals and educators for their planning and work throughout the summer. If you wish to view the August 25 meeting, please go to the Belmont Media website.

A Revised Phased Plan and timetable was also presented at the August 25 meeting. This Plan and the metrics used to support movement from phase to phase will be further discussed at the next School Committee meeting on Wednesday, September 2, beginning at 6:30 p.m. In addition, the hybrid models for each level will be presented to the School Committee. The agenda and access to the September 2 meeting is posted on the School Committee page. This meeting can also be viewed on the Belmont Media Center website.

Facilities Update:

As discussed at the School Committee meeting Tuesday, it is important to note that ensuring our buildings and classrooms are healthy to return to involves multiple steps. First we would like to thank a  parent group who has provided insight and guidance on the use of air purification units in our classrooms to ensure improved air exchange.  Our Director of Facilities Steve Dorrance is working with our business office to order 150 high and medium grade units to support classrooms and office spaces for school opening. We have also identified all inoperable windows and screens and have contracted with two companies to complete this work in order to provide an additional source of outside air flow. This work is complimented by the mechanical systems work that has been ongoing throughout the summer. In order to assess our air exchange status, an outside firm will conduct an air exchange audit.  This work is in process and should be completed in several weeks. The outcome of this report will provide the district with the information needed to make a decision about how and when we can move toward Phase 2 of our Phased Plan.  In addition we have purchased more hospital grade electrostatic fogging machines for sanitization of classrooms and spaces. This new purchase will result in one large unit in each building, which will give our hard working custodians and facilities personnel the right tools to properly clean and sanitize our buildings.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to our next School Committee meeting on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at 6:30 pm.

Respectfully,

John P. Phelan
Superintendent of Schools
Town of Belmont
