Notice to Parents Regarding School Committee Vote on Potential Fee Refunds during COVID-19

Dear Parents/Guardians,

At its meeting on April 28, 2020, the Belmont School Committee voted to refund the portion of fees paid for certain programs corresponding to days when the school buildings were closed due to COVID-19.

The fees voted to be refunded are:

  • Belmont High School Athletics — Fees paid for the Spring 2020 season, as that season had not commenced.
  • Busing — Fees paid applicable to days closed from mid-March through June.

*Note that the School Department is working with the Town Treasurer’s Office to process refunds. Due to the sheer volume of refunds (between 600-1,000), refunds will be processed weekly with the expectation that all refund checks will be mailed over the next six to eight weeks.

The following fees were voted by the School Committee not to be refunded:

  • Preschool tuition and Full Day Kindergarten tuition — Remote instruction is being provided for the students in these programs, as is being done in all other grades (1-12).
  • Fees for student clubs, activities, music and visual & performing arts — The majority of the program for each respective activity has been provided for the year.

*Note that any family that has experienced a change in household income due to the COVID-19 shutdown may request a tuition fee waiver for the Preschool or Full Day Kindergarten Programs, pertaining only to payments otherwise due on or after April 1, 2020, for the 2019-2020 School Year.  Families will receive more detailed instructions in a separate email.

Other fees:

  •  Food Service

    • For all students in grades K-11, funds already on deposit will remain in each student’s individual account for use during the 2020-2021 School Year.
    • For all graduating seniors, any funds already on deposit will be transferred to a sibling’s account, or refunded if there is no sibling in the district.
  • Summer School Enrichment

    • A determination has not yet been made as to whether the program with run or will be cancelled for the Summer 2020 sessions.
    • If the Summer 2020 sessions are cancelled, all payments made by families for these sessions will be refunded.
