Superintendent's September 13, 2019 Newsletter

date 9/13/2019

Welcome back to new and returning families and students. For those new to Belmont Public Schools who are receiving this newsletter for the first time, the Superintendent's newsletter shares information from the district on a monthly basis as well as listing a calendar of school events. We realize families are getting a lot of communication from their schools throughout the year, and we appreciate your attention to this newsletter.

The beginning of school is always a special time, and it is a treat for us to greet teachers and students as we visit the schools. We are happy school leaders have reported a smooth start to the year. This is always a busy time with people back to work and school, and we thank our community for their patience on the road and caution with students in the crosswalk. Also many thanks to the community for their patience around the high school construction as well as the high school administration and the Belmont Police Department for their assistance in showing families and students the adjusted parking and drop off areas. A gentle reminder while out on the roads that the speed limit for the town of Belmont is 25 MPH.

New teacher orientation Our teachers were back to school early for a three-day new teacher training that ended with a luncheon that gathered everyone together. It was wonderful to see all the new faces and return of the school administrators. After the early release of the first day of school, the staff attended a presentation in the high school auditorium and then went back to their school buildings for collaboration and preparation. It is always energizing to see all of our new and returning staff gathered together.

The schools are in full swing this month with many activities for families to get together such as picnics and breakfasts. We have a very welcoming and special community here at Belmont. We wish you all a great 2019-2020 school year.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE

  • Belmont Middle and High School Building Committee (BMHSBC): As we navigate through the high school construction period, we want to thank the Belmont Police, Fire, and Community Development Departments in Town who have been helping with safety plans for arrival and dismissal for walkers, bikers, bus, student drivers, and student drop off. In addition we discussed our communication protocol with the construction company, the school, police and fire departments regarding emergency at either the construction or school site in addition to the safety drill protocols already in place with the construction company. We appreciate and value our partnership with these Town departments and thank them for their attention to these important issues.
  • School Committee Fields Working Group: The School Committee Fields Working Group has reviewed the health, environmental, and financial aspects of turf and grass playing fields as the future landscape of the Belmont Middle and High School is being determined. The working group presented a progress update to the School Committee at the September 10 meeting. The BMHSBC will evaluate these findings as part of the decision-making process. Please see the SC Fields Working Group Progress Update as well as the Report of Findings - Artificial Turf versus Natural Grass Turf Playing Field located on the School Committee page.
  • Minuteman Membership:  Belmont's town representative on the Minuteman School Board, Jim Gammill, presented his findings on the benefit of Belmont returning as a member of the Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School.to the School Committee at the September 10 meeting. The next steps would culminate in a vote at Town Meeting.

For those new to the district, School Committee meeting presentations are found on the BPS website page under Committee - Public Documents - then look for the date of the SC meeting. The meetings are posted in the calendar section below and on the BPS website.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Teachers at Professional Development First Day of School All educators gathered in the high school auditorium on Wednesday, September 4 for our first professional development workshop for the 2019-20 school year. Our speakers was Debby Irving, author of Waking Up White. In her book and her talk, she shares her experiences learning about race and how this nation’s complicated history with race can cause us to have misunderstandings and biases that negatively impact students’ learning. This was a great launch to our third year focusing on improving the school experience and learning outcomes especially for our African American and Black students as we work to become more culturally responsive teachers. The District Culturally Responsive Teaching Steering Committee made up of teachers and administrators will develop two more workshops that principals will present to all educators in October and January. This is our top Strategic Plan initiative for 2019-20. For more information, please see the entire Strategic Plan. In addition to required professional development, educators have an array of elective professional development options, which you can view here on the PD page on the BPS website.
