Chenery Community Food Drive Yields Needed Items for Belmont Food Pantry

CMS Student Volunteers for Food Drive More than 4,000 items were delivered to the Belmont Food Pantry during the annual December food drive held by the Chenery Middle School Community Service Club and Student Council. This is the Belmont Food Pantry’s biggest food drive of the year, and Chenery families did not disappoint.

CMS Volunteers Sorting Items Run for a second year by Science Teacher Michael Williams, the drive has been an event at Chenery for more than 20 years. Williams says the goal this year was to streamline the process and make the food collected more immediately available to families in need. In past years, the Community Service Club would collect and deliver the food to the pantry, and then pantry volunteers would rush to unpack boxes, “The volunteers at the pantry needed to work very hard in order to do due diligence on their end before the food could be put on shelves,” says Williams. “Because of the size constraints of the pantry, this took a very long time.”

This year, a “Checking and Sorting” process began, with over 25 students and parents from the community, along with pantry volunteers, who checked expiration dates and sorted food items before they were dropped off at the pantry, “With everyone’s help, we were able to finish this task before dropping off and unloading the items at the Belmont Food Pantry later that day,” says Williams.
