Hundreds Run in the 2017 Annual FBE Dan Scharfman Memorial Run

More than 800 runners from across New England ran in the Foundation for Belmont Education’s (FBE) Fifth Annual Dan Scharfman Memorial Run, held on October 1. The weather cooperated with sunny and pleasant weather. The 5K route begins at the Belmont High School track, past Belmont’s six public schools and the Payson Park Reservoir, and finishes with a loop around Clay Pit Pond and the high school with a dash to the finish line at the BHS track. There is a companion 2K run for runners of all ages and abilities, which begins at the Belmont High School track around Clay Pit Pond, and back to the high school, finishing at the track.

The run raised more than $25,000, and the proceeds go towards the Dan Scharfman Education Innovation Fund, part of the Foundation for Belmont Education’s Innovative Teaching Initiative. The FBE fund helps prepare students for higher education and the 21st century workplace by allowing Belmont educators to acquire new teaching techniques and access innovative technology to enhance students learning experiences.

Dan Scharfman was an elected member of the Belmont School Committee and Belmont Town Meeting, who passed away suddenly in 2013. A father of two, he was a tireless advocate for the Belmont Public Schools. Scharfman was an avid runner, marathoner and ultra marathon. In tribute to him, the Scharfman Memorial Run began five years ago.

An event this size is always in need of help, and the FBE thanks the 100-plus volunteers who put in more than 275 hours to plan and prepare for the race and the many businesses that sponsored the race. In addition, thank you to the Belmont Police, Fire, and Public Works departments. Listed below are the winning runners, and some of the people and groups who make this race possible.
