Superintendent's October 12, 2017 Newsletter

date 10/12/2017

Summer still seems to be struggling to give up its reign to fall, but we are starting to see cooler days and nights for October. Either way the temperature goes, it is great weather to be in the stands cheering on the Belmont school sports teams or attending Broadway Night at the high school this weekend. October is also National Principals Month, and a wonderful opportunity to thank our principals for their hard work and dedication.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

SCHOOL COMMITTEE

Visioning Workshop at BHS Belmont High School Building Committee (BHSBC):  On September 19 and 20 there was a two-day Visioning workshop with the Design Architect Team. More than 70 educators and community members volunteered for these sessions, which looked at the impact of  the three possible grade configurations, teaching and learning, and how all the information being gathered may impact the design of the new building. This is the second workshop, continuing on the work done last spring. The design team, Perkins+Will, will integrate the information from the September 19 and 20 session along with the Frank Locker spring 2017 session findings. The feedback and information will be part of the educational program document submitted to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA).

There are upcoming Community Engagement meetings listed below. Please come by to hear about the project, and have a chance to give your input and ask questions. A recent meeting was held on September 19 at the Chenery Middle School. Please see that presentation here.

Below are the upcoming Community Engagement Meetings regarding the BHS building project:

  • Friday, October 13th @ 1:15pm (Beech Street Center)
  • Saturday, October 28th @ 10:00am (Belmont High School)
  • Wednesday, November 15th @ 7:30pm (Town Hall)
  • Tuesday, December 12th @ 7:00pm (Belmont High School)

  • Questions & Comments

In addition, I have made presentations at school PTO/PTA meetings on September 25 at Burbank, October 6 at Butler, and October 11 at Wellington. The next upcoming PTO/PTA  meetings are:

  • October 12 -  7:00 p.m - Chenery Community Room

BPS Enrollment: October 1 enrollment numbers are the official enrollment numbers schools in Massachusetts use to report to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and use for reporting during the year. As you can see from the presentation given to the School Committee on October 10, Belmont Public Schools has increased by 123 students from the October 1, 2016 reporting. As of the October 1 date, there are 4,531 students enrolled in Belmont Public Schools. Please see the enrollment presentation here.

Burbank Modulars: I presented information to the Burbank community about the Modulars at the PTA meeting on September 25. The district is very fortunate to have the support of the PTA, the Burbank Walks and Safe Routes to School members, and the Burbank community.  This has been a constructive and productive partnership. The administration heard the request for playground and parking reconfiguration work, and will continue to look toward a positive vote on a full proposal for the November Town Meeting. Please see my presentation to the School Committee on September 26 here.

TRANSITIONS

Wellington Principal Amy Spangler has announced her retirement as principal effective December 22, 2017. She has been a valuable educator and administrator while at Belmont Public Schools, and she will be missed. The district will outline the plan for Principal Spangler's replacement in the coming weeks.
