Chenery Food Drive Delivers

CMS Teacher Leon Dyer with StudentsChenery families donated more than 7,800 items to the Belmont Food Pantry during the December annual food drive held by the Chenery School Community Service Club and Student Council. A 24-foot truck was loaded with more than 270 boxes, and volunteers delivered and unloaded the boxes in under two hours, “We had a strong volunteer turnout,” says Chenery Fifth Grade Math and Science Teacher Michael Williams. “Without so many volunteers, it would have taken much longer.”

The drive has been held for more than 20 years, and this is Michael Williams first year organizing it, “My biggest takeaway was the overwhelming response I got whenever I needed volunteers,” says Williams. “It was incredible to see that volunteer slots would be filled within a matter of hours; it really showed the level of involvement that exists in this community.”

Belmont Food Pantry is completely supported by donations from Belmont families, businesses, and non-profits since it opened in 1992.  The all-volunteer staff at the pantry serves approximately 250 plus families per month.  The pantry welcomes donations of pasta; canned food such as fruit, tuna, meals in a can; and toiletry items.  Please see their website for more information on operating hours and how to donate:   https://sites.google.com/site/thebelmontfoodpantry/.
