Burbank North American Big Map Night

WHEN:    Thursday, May 21

TIME: 6-8pm

WHERE:  Burbank Gym

Explore the National Geographic Society's Big Map of North America! Funded by the Foundation for Belmont Education, this Big Map will be at Burbank all week. Burbank students will have had opportunities during the school day to work on the map.  Map Night is designed to share this enriching experience with families.

Some things you need to know:

  • This is NOT a drop-off event. All children who attend the event must be accompanied by an adult.
  • You MUST wear socks on the map
  • Before arriving, download a QR Code Reader application to your smart phone or tablet.  The scavenger hunt will be provided via a QR code, which you will scan with your device upon arrival at the school.  There will be 3 scavenger hunts available to download, grades K-1, grades 2-3 and grades 4-5.
  • Only 40 people are allowed on the map at a time.  To experience the Map, you must sign up for a 20 minute time slot.

Details:  Children MUST be accompanied by an adult while on the map.  During your 20 minute time block you will only be able to complete one scavenger hunt.  Therefore, if you have more than one child, spanning more than one scavenger hunt, please plan as follows:

  1. Bring one adult (with a smart phone or tablet) for each scavenger hunt and take your whole family on the map during one 20 minute slot.
  2. Bring only one adult (for more than one scavenger hunt) and sign up for more than one time slot so that you can do more than one scavenger hunt.  Please keep in mind that there is no childcare.  Therefore, you must take all of the children in your care with you onto the map.

For example, 1.  I have two children who attend Burbank, one is in Kindergarten, the other in third grade.  I am also bringing along my fifth grader.  I will bring another adult with me.  Therefore, I will register for one 20 minute block for five people.  We will bring two devices, one adult will follow the Kindergartener around and the other will follow the third grader around.

Or 2.  I have two children who attend Burbank, one is in Kindergarten, the other in third grade.  I am also bringing along my fifth grader.  I am the only adult attending for my family.  We would like to do both the K-1 and the 2-3 scavenger hunts.  Therefore, I will sign up for two time slots for 4 people each.  We will do one scavenger hunt at a time and my other children will come along.

When you sign up for a time slot(s) remember to count the total number of people in your party.

The first time slot begins promptly at 6:00.  Plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early for your map time.  We will ask everyone to gather in the cafeteria until called for your time on the map.

Please consider volunteering at the Big Map event.  Once you have signed up for your map time, please look over the volunteer support needed and consider adding a shift to your schedule.  Thank you for your help!
