Nominate a Teacher for a 2019 Outstanding Teacher Award

The Foundation for Belmont Education Outstanding Teacher Awards nomination period opens on Monday, February 25th. This recognition program, sponsored by the Belmont Savings Bank Foundation, recognizes and celebrates the extraordinary contributions made by teachers in the Belmont Public Schools. Community members, colleagues, parents, and high school and middle school students are encouraged to submit nominations for teachers who deserve this special recognition. Nominations are accepted between February 25th and March 31st by filling out an online form.

Belmont Public Schools Superintendent John Phelan announced February 5th that Isaac Taylor has accepted the position of Principal of Belmont High School. His work in the District will begin on July 1st, 2019. Mr. Taylor has been principal of North Middlesex Regional High School. His tenure at North Middlesex has involved coordinating the building of and moving into a new school.

We are proud to announce that thirty-one students from Belmont High School earned a total of fifty-two awards this year – Thirty-two Honorable Mentions, eleven Silver Key Awards, and eight Gold Key Awards. Additionally, 11th grader Victoria Shaw earned an American Vision award for her painting submission. Only five American Vision awards are given for the entire region. Victoria’s painting will be placed into consideration to be displayed during the Scholastic Arts National Exhibition in New York City. Congratulations to Sanya Malhotra for winning a Gold Key Award in the Poetry category for her "Scarlet Dreams" in the Scholastic Writing Competition.

As we close out the Foundation for Belmont Education’s silver anniversary year, we are incredibly proud of the important work we have been able to accomplish over the last 25 years. The FBE has awarded a remarkable $3.7 million to the Belmont Public Schools through our Learning Excellence Grants, special initiatives, and professional development programs. These awards have enriched every school and benefited every student in the Belmont Public Schools.

We are pleased to announce Kindergarten Parent Information Night for School Year 2019-2020: A general information program for parents of incoming kindergartners is scheduled for Thursday, January 24th at 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Chenery Middle School auditorium, 95 Washington Street (snow date Thursday, January 31). All grades, K-12, are open for 2019-2020 registration on the evening of January 24th for students new to Belmont Public Schools.

Congratulations to our BHS Quiz team, and the entire Belmont High School community on being one of 16 teams that has earned a place to compete on High School Quiz Show Season 10! The top teams advance to compete in the televised, single-elimination, bracketed academic tournament that will determine a state champion.

74 High School Students Accepted to MMEA Senior District Festival

This past Saturday, November 17, 134 students from the Belmont High Music Band, Chorus and Orchestra programs auditioned for the 2019 Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) Northeast Senior District Festival. Seventy-four students were selected to participate in the 2019 MMEA-Northeast Senior District Festival Band, Chorus, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble, which will take place in early January 2019.

More than 700 students from kindergarten to grade six competed at the18th annual Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE) Spelling Bee held on November 3 at Chenery Middle School. The Klueless Coyotes team spelled “schism” correctly and became the 2018 winning team. The Klueless Coyotes are sixth graders Billy Hendrickson, William Hou, William Lin, and Anthoney Lou. The runner-up team is Ms. Spellers, comprised of sixth graders Sarah Boss, Abbie Deng, Amelie Kim, and Maya Ramanathan.
