About School Library
Professional Library Aide: Laura Groff
The Winn Brook School Library is open during the school day and is staffed by a part-time professional library aide every day except Monday. Parent volunteers help out with shelving and circulation during their child's library period and also assist with special projects.
Each class visits the library for half an hour once a week, at which time the kindergarteners and first graders have a story time with the library aide and sign out books. Children in grades two, three and four accompany their teacher for book circulation and a story or activity.
Library Wish List
Winn Brook Library Wish List is now located on Amazon.com. Type “Winn Brook School” in the wish list category to access the list. It should bring up the list of books that the library would like to have. If you are purchasing one of the books listed, and you are not using Amazon, please delete the selection from the wish list. I hope that you will find this list helpful. Feel free to purchase books that might be your favorites even if they are not on the wish list. Thank you for your generous support of the Winn Brook Library.

Naming of Winn Brook Library
On Friday, March 1, 2002 the Winn Brook School officially named the library after Doug Weinstock who was the principal from September, 1989 to August, 2001. The parents organized a wonderful reception. Doug was here for the dedication along with his wife, Judy. Many parents and students who have been a part of the Winn Brook School also attended the dedication. A plaque honoring Doug was mounted in the library along with a drawing of Doug by Jack Coleman, highlighting Doug's accomplishments at Winn Brook School.
CIRCULATION POLICY
TEACHERS may sign out books and materials at any time and may keep them as long as they need them.
STUDENTS may sign out books only during their weekly half hour library period unless special arrangements are made with a member of the library staff. The book must be returned or renewed during the next library period the following week before another book may be borrowed. If a book is lost, the policy is as follows:
- Replacements need not be the same title, but should be suitable for grades K-4 and should be the same type of book; ie, sports book, dinosaur book, picture book, mystery, drawing book, etc.
- EXCEPTION: Brand new titles should be replaced by the exact title.
- Replacements may be new or used, but must be in good condition.
- Paperbacks (PB) should replace paperbacks, while hard covers (HC) should replace hard covers.
If the missing book turns up later in the school year, the replacement book will be returned to the child.
Winn Brook Library Volunteers Information
Library volunteers may sometimes help in the library without a library professional. We are lucky that our talented library aide, Laura Groff, will continue to provide a story time for children in kindergarten and grade 1. In grades 2-4, classroom teachers can bring their classes to the library for book exchange at any time during their scheduled half-hour library period. We’re counting on your support!
Besides the annual orientation meeting, there are other options to get you acclimated to library volunteering:
- Come to the library one week early and work alongside the last month’s volunteer
- Call one of the volunteer “trainers” and arrange to work together on your first library day.
- Review the procedures found in this packet.
Please find attached a schedule of library volunteers for your child’s grade level. We tried to accommodate all requests for specific dates. In some cases, we had more volunteers than months in the year, so we assigned two people to a month. Please arrange to either come in together or split the month between the two of you so you may take turns checking in books and assisting with shelving etc. If the month we assigned is inconvenient, please try to switch with someone else or, contact one another to “split” the month if you prefer. There is always work to do, so if you have extra time, please speak to Mrs. Groff about special projects. Also, please note that several months for several classes remain “open”. Please call one of the volunteer coordinators if you are able to help out.
IF AN EMERGENCY OF CONFLICT ARISES, PLEASE FIND A SUBSTITUTE TO TAKE YOUR PLACE. As much as we love to hear from you, please refrain from calling the Library Volunteer Committee on the morning of your conflict for assistance in resolving it. A substitute list is included for your convenience. Calling the person scheduled during the month following your month will often result in a one week “switch” which works well.
