Activities in the classroom that are connected to religious or cultural holidays are selected for their educational content and to increase students' awareness of different cultural and religious practices and traditions. The manner and extent to which holidays are acknowledged in the classroom are at the teacher's discretion and may depend on the diversity within each classroom, the curriculum for that grade level, and the interests of the children. Special care is taken to be sensitive to varying family customs and traditions and to ensure that any particular ethnic and religious holidays are not seen as being endorsed by the school.
For holidays such as Halloween and Valentine's Day, teachers try to balance children's interest and excitement with what they see as appropriate in terms of class time. The amount of attention devoted to such holidays is greater for the younger grades. Sometimes teachers at a given grade level will decide together how to handle a given celebration.
Typically, for either Veteran's Day or Memorial Day, Winn Brook students at a given grade level are involved in recognition ceremonies at the school for local veterans.
