Parent participation at Wellington is encouraged and greatly appreciated. Below you will find a listing of leadership boards and their role in the Wellington Community. If you are looking to get involved, whether it be in a lead position or a individual contributer role, we welcome you. For more information on an individual contributor type role, please look at the PTO section of the website for more information on who to contact.
School Advisory Council
The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 requires each public school in the Commonwealth to establish a School Advisory Council, composed of parent, teacher and community representatives. The Council has responsibility for assisting the principal “in the identification of the educational needs of the students attending the school, in the review of the annual school budget, and in the formulation of a school improvement plan...”. (M.G.L. c.59B, s.59c, as amended).
The PTO, under the direction of the principal, administers the election of parent representatives, who generally serve two-year terms. Parents interested in serving on the School Advisory Council, should speak with the principal or the PTO president. SAC contact information is available here.
The Wellington Advisory Council meets once a month at the school. The meetings are open to the public and are subject to the Massachusetts Open Meeting Law. Agendas and minutes of Council meetings are posted on the bulletin board located in the school office. Notice of the meeting times are provided in the principal’s newsletter.
The PTO
The Wellington Parent Teachers Organization (“PTO”) provides the school with numerous programs which serve the school's pupils, parents, and staff. During the school year, for example, the PTO sponsors a variety of educational and enrichment activities for our students, such as the Book Fair and the Wellington Spring Fair. Proceeds from these events are used to fund in-school enrichment events, field trips and other programs for the benefit of all our students.
The PTO also publishes a school directory listing the addresses and phone numbers of all Wellington students. The PTO bulletin board, located near the playground entrance across from the lower IMC (Instructional Medial Center), is a good source of current information about PTO programs, meetings, and upcoming events. All parents are invited and encouraged to join the Wellington PTO for a nominal annual fee.
A nominating committee is put together by the Executive Board in early spring to identify candidates for the following year's Executive Board and all Coordinator positions. The members of the Executive Board are voted in at the general PTO annual meeting in May. If not all are identified at this time, they are voted in at the first general PTO meeting in September. The Executive Board is made up of the President(s), Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary(s), Vice President(s) and the Principal. The organizational structure of the PTO is set up so that the PTO's Student Care board and committees are the management responsibility of the Executive Board. For the most up-to-date listing of PTO Committees and Coordinators please refer to the Student Directory that you received in the fall. PTO contact information is available here.

Belmont typically hosts 125 students as part of the METCO program. This program fosters a broader educational and social experience for both suburban and urban children and their families.
