BELMONT SCHOOL COMMITTEE MINUTES
CHENERY MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY ROOM
APRIL 1, 2009

Present:      Mr. John Bowe, Chair
            Ms. Ann Rittenburg, Secretary
Ms. Elizabeth Gibson
            Ms. Leslie Walker
            Ms. Laurie Graham
Ms. Becky Vose
            Dr. Patricia Aubin, Superintendent of Schools

           
This was a joint meeting with the Board of Selectmen and the Warrant Committee.


1.      OPENING BUSINESS

      1.1      Call to Order           

      At 8:34 p.m., Mr. John Bowe called the meeting to order in the Community Room at Chenery Middle School.

      None

1.4           Citizens’ Concerns

None.


2.      UNFINISHED BUSINESS

      No unfinished business was discussed.


3.        MAJOR BUSINESS

      Discussions continued on the FY10 budget.  

      Mr. Bowe distributed a list of teacher and staff cuts as currently anticipated in an available funds budget.
     
      Dr. Aubin provided information on the federal stimulus package.  Dr. Aubin stressed that the school system does not yet have exact dollar figures.  She also reminded those in attendance that the Commissioner of Education for Massachusetts has stated that fifty percent of funds received may be used to assist with current funding short fall and that the remaining fifty percent of funds must be used for long term investments and improvements that will last beyond the two-year stimulus package.

      Given the need for additional information regarding state and federal education dollars, the Board of Selectmen and the Warrant Committee agreed that it was still too early to make decisions about the use of free cash and the split between town and school.

      At 9:54 p.m., on a motion offered by Ms. Graham and seconded by Ms. Vose, it was

      VOTED:  unanimously to adjourn the meeting.
