In Brief

Thank You for Supporting the PTO!

Thank you to all families who contributed to the Chenery PTO’s Annual Appeal this year. We exceeded our fundraising expectations and, because of your generosity, we will purchase two Chromebook Carts for Chenery. We are excited to announce that the Belmont Public Schools Technology Department has agreed to match this donation with two additional Carts--for a total for four.

Thank you for supporting our students with this fantastic new equipment!

Green Corner Update

Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Chenery administration, custodial and cafeteria staff, teachers, students, and the Chenery Green Team, the 2017-2018 school year has been a time of significant change in, and greening of, the Chenery Middle School cafeteria.

September began with a focus on behavioral change and tighter routines in the Chenery cafeteria. Once in place, focus shifted to expanding and improving recycling and reducing waste.

To date, Chenery has:

  • eliminated Styrofoam trays and replaced them with a type that will compost
  • begun stacking trays for disposal, thus reducing the total volume of trash
  • eliminated non-recyclable straws
  • reduced waste production in the cafeteria by more thoughtfully diverting recyclable materials
  • created the “Trash Basher” program in grades 5 and 6, a volunteer student group tasked with monitoring and assisting with the refuse stream

As Chenery enters the 2018-2019 school year, the cafeteria will become even greener! Refuse centers are being built for the cafeteria designed to make it easy for students and staff to correctly sort waste. The centers will have designated depositories for liquid pour off, bottle and can recycling, milk and juice carton recycling, trash, compost and tray stacking. The Trash Bashers are rallying for a big splash in the fall—hoping to expand to all four grades, 5-8.

Additionally, Mike McAllister, Principal, Gene O’Brien, Head Custodian, and members of the Chenery Green Team have met with a representative from Black Earth Composting. The team hopes to add the final piece to this stream next year—composting—pending the securing of funding for the service. Once contracted, a representative from Black Earth Composting will provide educational programming for students and staff.

Hats off to the entire Chenery community for having the enthusiasm and tenacity to launch change, and for the careful planning to move forward and expand, creating a model for all Belmont Public Schools in the future.

7th Grade Parent Volunteers Needed

Hello 7th grade parents,

Traditionally, 7th Grade Parents help out with the end of year 8th grade activities so that 8th grade students and families can enjoy the events.

  1. The 8th grade Class Night Party happens a a few days before the end of school.
  2. The 8th Grade Reception happens following the Moving On Ceremony on the last day of school.

We need approximately 10 more volunteers at 8th Grade Class Night. Would you be one of them?

Monday, June 18th from 5:45 to 9:00 for the 8th Grade Class Night Party.

7th Grade Parents chaperone during the event and we need over 40 volunteers. Chaperoning is fun (really) and gives you an opportunity to see what your 7th grader will experience next year. 8th grade parents handle set up & clean-up. 7th grade parents oversee games, organize food, and provide general crowd control. To sign up to help, please use the link below.

Sign Up to Chaperone

Wednesday, June 20th from 9am - 11am for the 8th Grade Reception.

The 8th grade parents plan and shop for the reception but we need 7th grade parents to run the event from setup to clean-up after the reception. To help, please use the link below.

"Belmont Super" at Kids Triathlon New England 2018

Belmont kids 6 and above, please come and join the “Belmont Super” race and volunteering team at Kids Triathlon New England 2018!

For those of you who don’t know yet, the 7th annual New England Kids Triathlon is a super fun event, which will be held at the MIT campus on July 15th this year. There are more than 1000 participants age 6 to 15. It’s expected to be one of the biggest kids triathlons in the United States this year! This is the 4th year a group of Belmont kids teamed up as Belmont Super to race. For the past two years, Belmont Super has been the largest team at the race. We have raised over $2000 collectively for the Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE). The event is quickly sold out, so if your kids are interested, make sure to register soon! The race can be registered at:

Remember to use the team name “Belmont Super” when you register, this way the organizers can make donation of $10 to FBE for each participating “Belmont Super” kid.

There is also a great volunteering opportunity for kids 14 and older:

Again, make sure to put down the group name “Belmont Super” when you register to volunteer. For each volunteer the organizer will donate $10 to FBE too. This can also be counted as your community service hours.

To help the kids prepare for the race, the organizers offer training through the Belmont Recreation Department. There will be a total of 6 sessions, including 2 for swimming, 2 for biking and 2 for running.

The first training session starts May 31st, so please hurry up to sign for the training. Don’t miss the opportunity to train with your friends under the direction of our very own Becca Pizzi and Kim Raubenheimer! Detailed information about the training and registration can be found here.
