A Message from Principal McAllister

"The Chenery PTO represents the idea of 'possibility' for us. True, we have a foundation budget from the town of Belmont that covers our day-to-day expenses. However, when a teacher comes forward with a pitch that begins, 'I have this idea I've been thinking of...' we are not always able to accommodate it within that foundation budget. It is usually at that point where we say, 'I wonder if the PTO might be able to help out?' We want teachers to think innovatively in order to do things differently and better, but that kind of thinking is not always easily accommodated within a traditional school budget. The Chenery PTO helps encourage teachers to consider new possibilities— new field trips, new guest speakers, new initiatives, new learning materials. We are so thankful for the Chenery PTO for their generosity towards us, and for their advocacy on behalf of us! It is a great partnership on behalf of children."

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the PTO’s Annual Appeal for 2017—18! It is only with your generosity that we are able to bring enrichment programs, scholarships for class trips, support for teacher creativity, community building, social events and more to our students and families at Chenery.

We have reached our fundraising goal, and exceeded it with 30% of our Chenery families donating. If you have not yet contributed, please join in supporting amazing experiences.

In Brief

We welcomed Janice Darias, Assistant Superintendent to our February 1 PTO Meeting. She shared the in-depth work teachers and administrators are undertaking in the study of the achievement gap among students, cultural competencies and social-emotional learning within the schools, their interplay and impact on teaching and learning. Thank you for joining us Ms. Darias!

THANK YOU to the many parents and students who helped to make a wonderful Teacher and Staff Treat Week!! Families brought in delicious and thoughtful treats such as home-baked pumpkin bread, breakfast bars, yogurt, fruit salad, Frappuccino, bagels, cookies, individually wrapped chocolate favors, pizza, and more! It was a great way to show the Chenery staff how much we appreciate all that they do for our students!

Trash Bashers: We are excited to announce the introduction of Trash Bashers to 5th Grade Lunch. A large team of Volunteers began the week of January 29 and with tremendous success! Thank you to Mr. Williams for leading the team! Keep up the amazing work 5th Grade!

Enrichment Update

Tom Wahle once again brought his engaging and educational Techsploration programs to Chenery fifth and sixth graders. In December, the sixth grade was treated to Tom's dynamic "Shocking Facts About Electricity" show. Tom introduced the students to various ways to make electricity and produce power. He even brought his own Van de Graaff generator for an in-auditorium lightning show!

In January, Tom returned to conduct his "Simple Machines" show for the fifth grade. Through a series of fun demonstrations (with lots of audience participation) with levers, belts, pulleys, and gears, Tom demonstrated how simple machines help us do work by trading distance for effort. He also showed how all complex machines are made up of simple machines. Over the course of three days, each fifth grade class had the opportunity to participate in an individual, hands-on 'Gearing Up for Speed' workshop, where students used gears to build a transmission for a car.

Thank you for your generosity in the Annual Appeal which makes these programs possible!
