MCAS Testing: I am happy to share the news that, as of Monday, 5/21/2018, all formal MCAS test sessions are marked complete.  Make-up sessions for students who were absent from school when the rest of their grade tested will continue through this Friday, 5/25/2018.

Emergency Planning: The topic of gun violence and school security continues to be on our nation’s collective minds with each additional story we hear about in the news.  Despite this intense focus in the media, it is important for all Chenery parents/guardians and students to know that school safety is always an issue your school leaders have been focused on.  This year, especially, we have done a lot of work to update our emergency procedures.  On Tuesday, 5/29/2018 in the Chenery Auditorium we will be sharing the steps we have taken for all interested parents/guardians, including:

  • Review our district's general approach to school safety
  • Outline Chenery's day-to-day emergency protocols
  • Introduce our new "enhanced” safety procedures

All parents/guardians are invited to attend.

Class Placement: Although next year probably seems a long way off, here at Chenery we are already looking forward to 2018-2019.  Class placement is one of the most important things to you and your children, so we want to be certain that we are as thoughtful and thorough as possible.  Starting on Tuesday, May 1 and continuing through Thursday, May 31 we will make available “Parent Placement Consideration Forms” in our main office.  They are not required to be completed by all parents, but if you have any special circumstances you would like us to know about before assigning your child to a teacher and a team please submit one for your child.  For the sake of convenience, all forms can be picked up and returned to the Chenery main office.  If you have any additional questions regarding placement, please contact me at school at 617-993-5800.

From Karen Duff, Librarian: Hello Chenery Parents, and greetings from the Chenery Library! It is that time of year again to SAVE THE DATE! On Thursday, June 7th, Chenery will host its annual “Spring Into Summer” Reading Author Festival!  The event will take place in the Chenery cafeteria and we have 13 authors joining us this year.  Join us from 3:00-5:30pm in the cafeteria, buy books for summer reading, and meet some wonderful local authors.  The party will then move to Belmont Books from 6:00-8:00pm for pizza, author readings, signings, and conversation.  For more details, please go to:

Nominate a STEM Teacher: iRobot is asking students to nominate a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Teacher that has inspired them.  They will pick a winner from K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and high school.  Winning teachers will be honored on field at Fenway!  If you know of a Belmont educator worthy of this award, please consider nominating them.

Grade 8 Celebrations: Hello 7th grade parents!  Traditionally, 7th grade parents help out with the end-of-year 8th grade activities so that 8th grade students and families can enjoy the events.  These include:

1.      The 8th grade Class Night Party: Happens a few days before the end of school

7th Grade Parents chaperone during the event and we need over 40 volunteers. Chaperoning is fun (really!) and gives you an opportunity to see what your child will experience next year. 8th grade parents handle set up & clean-up. 7th grade parents oversee games, organize food, and provide general crowd control. To sign up to help, please use the following link:

2.      The 8th Grade Reception: Happens following the “Moving On” ceremony on the last day of school

The 8th grade parents plan and shop for the reception, but we need 7th grade parents to run the event from setup to clean-up after the reception. To help, please use the following link:

We are looking for 7th grade parent volunteers to help at both events.  Please sign up to help at either event. If you cannot make the entire time, let us know what you can do.  If you have any questions, please contact us at  Thank you for your help from the Chenery PTO!

Sign up for a Belmont Library Card: With summer reading lists set to be released soon, now is the perfect time to get your child their very own library card form the Belmont Public Library.  Library cards are available to all Belmont residents, Chenery families who live in Boston and take part in our METCO program, and residents of other communities, too.  To register in person simply visit the library and provide: A) Driver’s license with your current, local address on it, or B) Photo ID and proof of local residency (two official pieces of mail with your current, local address).  You can also register online and receive a temporary library card, which will give you six months of access to state-funded databases and eBooks, and the ability to reserve materials.  Simply visit the library within 30 days to have your account upgraded to full access by providing the identification requirements listed above (Note: Children must be able to write their own name in order to receive a library card; please do not online-register children who do not meet this requirement.  For more details on children’s policies check out:  Thanks to Peter Struzziero at the Belmont Public Library for their partnership with the Chenery Middle School!

Summer Planning: Now that winter is behind us and spring is on our doorstep, many families may be looking to arrange their summer plans. When organizing the family calendar, please take into consideration that the current scheduled last day of school is June 20th. Students are expected to remain in school until this date. Please schedule your summer plans around this time.

A Message for Grade 4 Parents/Guardians: Although Grade 5 probably seems a long way off, here at Chenery we are eagerly looking forward to your child’s entry into our school community! Class placement and school orientation are two of the most important things to you and your children during this time of transition, so we want to be certain that we are as thoughtful and thorough as possible. To that end, please take note of the following dates:

  • Starting on Tuesday, May 1st and continuing through Thursday, May 31st we will make available “Placement Consideration Forms” at each elementary school main office. They are not required to be completed, but if you have any special circumstances you would like us to know about before assigning your child to a teacher and a team please submit one for your child. For the sake of convenience, all forms can be picked up and returned to the main office at your child’s elementary school.
  • On Tuesday, June 5th @ 6:30-8:00pm in the Chenery Auditorium we will be hosting a special “Parent/Guardian Orientation” presentation for all incoming Grade 4 Parents/Guardians. We will provide a brief PowerPoint presentation, answer any questions, and then give a brief building tour of Grade 5 learning spaces.  Please note that this is an adult-only event.
  • During the week of Monday, June 4th through Friday, June 8th all Grade 4 classrooms will have the opportunity to come to Chenery Middle School for a “Student Orientation” and building tour. This opportunity will be arranged in conjunction with Grade 4 classroom teachers and Principals. Please note that this will occur during the school day and is a child-only event.

We are looking forward to welcoming your child next year to the Chenery family!

Grade 9 Orientation: Save the date!  On Thursday, August 30 Belmont High School will hold their 9th Grade Orientation at Belmont High School.  Incoming Grade 9 Parents/Guardians and their students are invited to a welcome to BHS from student “Connectors,” get a tour of the school, and have your questions answered!
