W.L. CHENERY MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT/GUARDIAN NEWSLETTER

Friday, September 1, 2017

I hope that this communication finds you enjoying your summer vacation.  While we are all preparing for the start of a new year, it is my hope that you are also finding ways of squeezing out the last few drops of summer.  I have enjoyed seeing teachers back in the building in the last few days of summer.  In my opinion schools are at their best when they are full of people and energy, so I welcome both you and your children back for a new year.  I write with a few updates on the work we are focusing on during this quiet summer time.

9/5       (T)       All Day                                    Teachers return to school

9/6       (W)      7:45am-1:15pm                       First Day of School for all Grade 5-8 students

Hiring: This year we welcome many new faces to our Chenery family.

  • We welcome Kerry Eaton as our new Grades 5 ELA/SS Teacher.
  • We welcome Eleanor Ahlborn-Hsu as our new Grade 5 Special Education Teacher.
  • We welcome Elizabeth Willis as our new Grade 6 Special Education Teacher.
  • We welcome Emily Communiello as our new Grade 7 Math Teacher.
  • We welcome Steve Berson as our new Art Teacher.
  • We welcome Kim Walls as our new Reading Specialist.
  • We welcome Margaret Dagon as our new Grade 5 Instrumental Music Teacher.
  • We welcome Sean Landers, who will be splitting his time between BHS and Chenery this year for the music department.
  • We welcome Sarah Carson as our new Chorus Teacher.
  • We welcome back Liz Pruitt, who will be returning after a maternity leave, for Grade 7 French and Spanish.

Class Placement: Placement letters went home the week of August 21st, which was is in line with what Chenery has done in the past.  If you did not receive a letter please contact us at 617-993-5800.

Scheduling: We have worked hard on the schedule, ensuring that all placement requests were considered.  Although they were not all possible, I can say with confidence that every single one was reviewed and carefully considered.  In a school of 1400+ students, this is no small task.  I am indebted to Mr. Hartunian, Mr. Lewis, Ms. Rinder, and Mrs. Soliozy for their help on this process.  They worked exceptionally hard trying to solve problems, track the tiniest details, and create a schedule that is best for students.  Student schedules were made available on the PlusPortal on Tuesday, August 29, 2017.

Parent Portal: The PlusPortal system is the primary way we disseminate important student information.  Teachers also use them to post course materials, assignments, tests, and quizzes.  If you require any assistance with your PlusPortalaccount please contact the BPS Technology Department at 617-993-5450.

Student Schedules on the Portal: Students schedules are now available for viewing on the Portal. Please note that:

1.      The student schedules that are posted should be considered tentative at this time.

2.      Minor updates and changes to student schedules will occur through Tuesday, September 5.

3.      The schedules for new students may not yet be available, but should by Tuesday, September 5.

4.      We ask that you hold scheduling inquiries until Monday, September 4, as many concerns may be addressed by then.

5.      Please do not send your child to school with their printed schedule from the Portal. Your child will receive a clean and final copy of their schedule in their Homeroom class on Wednesday, September 6.

Summer Maintenance: Our custodians Gene O’Brien and Romario Castro have been busy at work preparing the building for our return.  The school looks beautiful.  When you see them around campus please take time to appreciate their hard work.

Calendar updates: If you would like to view the school calendar, it is available at: http://www.belmont.k12.ma.us/bps/Portals/0/docs/calendar/BPS-Calendar-2017-18.pdf

Curriculum Night: The Chenery PTO will be hosting our annual “Back to School” Curriculum Nights on Wednesday, September 27 for the Lower School and Tuesday, October 3 for the Upper School.  In the coming weeks I will be sending out a detailed schedule so for now please just save the date.

Free/Reduced Lunch: Please remember that families who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch need to re-apply every year.  Applications do not carry over from year to year.  The 2017-18 free and reduced application is now posted on the school website in multiple languages at: http://www.belmont.k12.ma.us/bps/Home/Food-Services

School Supplies: Some teachers or teams may reach out this summer regarding school supplies, but most will not. It is not necessary or critical for students to have their supplies ready for the first day of school.  Please know that to prepare for the first day, all students really need to bring are their minds and an excitement for the coming school year!

Reminder of Times: Our regular school hours are:

  • M, T, Th, Fri: 7:45am - 2:25pm
  • Regular’ Wednesday: 7:45m. - 1:15pm
  • Early Release’ Wednesday: 7:45am - 11:00am

Please note that homeroom announcements begin at 7:55am every morning.  However, students should arrive before then, as early as 7:30am.  Students arriving late miss important instruction and begin their day already behind.

Registration: Please note that registration for new students and families is on a rolling basis, which is different from previous years when we used to have specific “set aside” dates.  Additionally, the registration process now begins online, rather than in person in the main office.  Please visit the following link for important information regarding changes to this year’s registration process: http://www.belmont.k12.ma.us/bps/Registration-Information

We welcome 1,435 children to our school community this year.  This is the highest ever in Chenery’s history and includes 78 new summer arrivals!  This year’s students represent an incredibly diverse student body: You come from 32 U.S. states and 39 different countries.  At home you speak over 30 different languages.  Despite these differences, we are all united in our goal of providing a world class education for every student.  I am happy to announce that we continue to achieve that goal, having recently been rated the #7 Middle School in Massachusetts (https://www.niche.com/k12/search/best-public-middle-schools/s/massachusetts/) by Niche, a school and community rating company affiliated with Carnegie-Mellon University.  It is through the hard work of our teachers and students and the support of our families at home that we are able to achieve at that level, as we have for so many years.  So Merhaba, Pari yegak, Foon ying, Huan yin, Bienvenue, Pe kher ragle, Willkommen, Brucha haba'a, Swaagatam, Irashaimasu, Oso oseyo, Dobro pozhalovat', Bienvenidos, Khush amaadiid, and Welcome to all of you!  I am looking forward to an excellent year together.

If I can be of any assistance to you or your children please contact me at 617-993-5800.  My office is always open to you.

Respectfully, Michael E. McAllister,
Principal
